My 2 Round Mock Draft
By JeffM (3/22)

In my opinion, most teams make a 1st round mock draft for the following reason: If you pick 10th and you really need a OLB and CB, who do you take first if players of similar quality are both there. You project how many OLBs and CBs will be taken before your next pick in round 2. If 7 OLBs are projected to go and only 2 CBs, the I would pick an OLB. So here goes.

Round 1

1. Cleveland: Courtney Brown-DE
Might be the best player in the draft. Most consider him the best DE to come out since Bruce Smith. They already have a franchise OLB in Miller and #1 WR in Johnson, so Brown is their pick.

2. Washington: Arrington-OLB
One of the 3 best players in the draft. many consider him to be the closest thing to LT. Have made no bones that he is their player.

3. Washington: Peter Warrick-WR
The team only has 2 WRs and both are UFAs next year. Warrick is third in the great triangle of this draft. Franchise-type player. Many project Samuels here, but he is coming of an injury and the Redskins just resigned their LT and are high on last years draft pick, Derrick Smith.

4. Cinn: Thomas Jones-RB
Dillon will not be back next year and they have nobody to replace him. Jones is the best back in the draft. He is good runner with speed and hands.

5. Baltimore: Jamal Lewis-RB
Really wanted Jones, but Lewis is the next best thing. Tremendous speed and he has very good hands. very productive in college and should be a perfect fit in Billick's offense (ala Robert Smith)

6. Philly: Corey Simon-DT
They need some big bodies up front and Simon is the best DT and 2nd best DL in the draft. Very strong and quick with a non-stop motor.

7. Arizona: Shaun Alexander
They covet Jones, but will be happy with Alexander. he will give them their first real running threat since a healthy Hearst.

8. Pittsburgh: Buress-WR
The Steelers covet a WR with his size. He lacks break away speed, but should be a perfect complement to the speedster, Edwards. All they need now is a QB to throw them the ball.

9. Chicago: Urlacher-OLB
They really really like this guy. In college, he played safety and returned kicks at 250 lbs. Has good speed for his size (4.6), but he just makes plays. He will give the Bears some athleticism on defense.

10. Denver: Franks-TE
Perfect fit. He can block, catch and run. He will not only help spring Davis, but has the ability to stretch defenses in the passing game. Should fill the void left by Sharpe.

11. NY Giants: Ron Dayne-RB
The Giants have not had a running game in years. A threat of a running game is needed to open up Fassel's passing game. I do not know why, but the Giants have always coveted big bruising RBs and Dayne fits this mold perfectly although he is somewhat soft.

12. San Francisco: Samuels-OT
There luck has not run out. Barring the trade up by another team, Samuels will fall into their laps. He was a player they considered at 3. yet they were able to trade down and still get him. All I can say is that they may be very fortunate.

13. Tampa Bay: Jerry Porter-WR
Dungy has fallen in love with this guy. Dungy likes his size, speed and athleticism. He will automatically become King's go to guy and finally give the Bucs a playmaker on offense.

14. Green Bay: Hovan-DT
Green Bay wanted Simon, but are very satisfied with Hovan. They cannot rely on Brown and it appears that the deal for Adams has fallen through, so Hovan should be a nice consolation prize.

15. Baltimore: Travis Taylor-WR
Has speed and good hands. Able to come out of breaks without losing speed. Will go over the middle or deep. Along with Jamal Lewis and Sharpe, he will give Banks some weapons to work with.

16. NY Jets: Ellis-DE
Parcells wanted Brown in the worst way and will continue his attempts to trade into the Cleveland's spot. Ellis is the 2nd best DE in the draft and should give the Jets a much needed pass rush from the outside.

17. Oakland: Deon Grant-FS
The Raiders are ecstatic that he dropped this far. He will provide much needed youth and speed into the middle of the Raiders defensive backfield.

18. NY Jets: Pinkston-WR
It is commonly known now that Johnson wants out of town. The Jets make this selection with the expectation that Johnson will be traded either this year or next. He will give them much needed speed on the outside.

19. Seattle: Dez White-WR
The loss of Galloway will be eased by the drafting of White. White has very good size and perfectly fits the mold of a WCO WR, much better than Galloway in fact.

20. Detroit: McIntosh-OT
Many consider him on par with Samuels. The weak link of the Lions last year was a tie between their RBs and OL. The signing of Stewart eases the problem at RB and McIntosh should provide help at OT.

21. Kansas City: Julian Petterson-OLB
The tragic loss of DT has left a big hole in the Chiefs defense. Peterson has tremendous athletic ability and showed that he has the ability to cover TEs in the Senior Bowl. Should be a perfect fit for the Chiefs.

22. Seattle: Ike Charlton-CB
He has good size, speed and playmaking ability. The guy has skills and cover ability. He should be a nice complement to Springs.

23. Carolina: John Abraham-OLB/DE
The retirement of Kevin Greene was a huge loss for the Panthers. Abraham plays the game and fits the mold of Greene. He is considered a pass rush specialist that can play down or on the outside.

24. San Francisco: Darren Howard-DE
The Niners by pass on the CBs due to the fact that only 1 has been drafted to this point and that they pick at the top of round 2. Instead they go for another dire need in DE, Darren Howard. He will give them an outside pass rush, which may help the CBs in pass coverage.

25. Minnesota: Lewis Sanders-CB
Sanders has very good coverage skills, not to mention blazing speed (4.3). The Rams, not mention the rest of the league, exploited the Vikings secondary last year. On top of that, they lost their top CB to the Panthers. Should provide instant help.

26. Buffalo: JR Redmond-RB
The Bills not only did not have a reliable RB, but they lost their 3rd down back to Miami. Redmond should be able to fill both roles. Very good speed and great hands. Should become the #1 TB almost immediately.

27. Tampa Bay: McDougle-OT
Very large man that should provide the Bucs with a reliable OT for many years. He will be counted on immediately as a replacement for the retired Gruber.

28. INDY: Rob Morris-ILB
The Colts were very weak on defense last year. They have a solid DE in Bradtzke and a promising OLB in Peterson. Morris should provide an instant upgrade to their run defense.

29. Jacksonville: Cosey Coleman-OG
The Jags are very thin and vulnerable at the OG position. This may have been their down fall last year as Tenn's DTs dominated them. he should dramatically upgrade the position held by Wigert last year.

30. Tenn: John Engleberger-DE
Great motor and posses pass rush skills. a little undersized at 260 lbs., but so was Kearse. He should be a nice bookend complement to Kearse and provide the Titans with a formidable outside pass rush.

31. St Louis: Keith Bullock-OLB
Could be the perfect fit. Played SS, SOLB and MLB in college. Posses very good coverage skills and makes plays no matter were he plays. Would be a perfect SOLB in the pros and would be a nice replacement for Jones after the 2000 season. he also possesses tremendous speed. He along with Fletcher and Little would give the Rams 3 Lbs. with sub 4.44 speed.

Round 2

32. Cleveland: Anthony Becht-TE
The Browns have the QB, the WR and just signed a RB in Rhett. Becht gives them a TE that can not only block, but he also gives them an additional receiving threat over the middle. They used the middle of the field very little last year. Becht's presence should open the outside even more for Johnson.

33. New Orleans: Delta O'Neal-CB
Although they have been busy in the off season, they lost their best CB in Ambrose. Playing in the same division as the Rams, they need as many CBs as possible. O'Neal's coverage skills may be the most polished of all the CBs, next to Plummer, in the draft. He also has very good speed (4.4) to stay with the speed WRs and is bigger than Plummer. Should start immediately.

34. Cinn: Ahmed Plummer-CB
Plummer gives the Bengals a polished CB that should be able to start immediately. He is not a super star, but he should be a solid starter for many years. He will give much needed help to a horrible secondary.

35. San Francisco: Rashard Anderson-CB
The Niners not only got the OT they wanted, a DE, but they now get the CB they coveted in this draft. Anderson has good size and decent speed. He still needs work on his technique, but could develop into a first rate CB.

36. Philly: Gaylor-WR
Andy Reid does not have the offensive weapons that he needs to run the WCO. The addition of Gaylor would a step in the right direction. Should become a favorite target for McNabb.

37. Atlanta: Todd Wade-OT
With a fragile QB, you need a solid OL or he will not last. Last year, Chandler was carried off the field almost as many times as he started. Wade should bolster a mediocre OL and challenge Salamm for the starting ROT position.

38. Pittsburgh: Chad Pennington-QB
The Steelers draft the 1st QB. If you only had Stewart and Graham throwing the ball, you would draft a QB high as well. he cannot be worse than anything they have and may end up seeing action this year.

39. Chicago: Janikowski-PK
Absolutely love this guy. After going through 3 kickers last year, Janikowski should not only stabilize the position, but become a weapon.

40. Denver: Cavil-WR
The Broncos have always lacked a much needed 3rd WR since Shanahan has been there. cavil should give the Broncos a 3rd option. Has very good hands and great speed. H also possesses the size that WCO offense and Shanahan desires.

41. Arizona: Walker-DT
The Cards best 2 DTs want out of town. Smith held out last year and there is no reason to think he will not do it again. Walker should give them a much needed body in the middle and provides insurance in case 1 of their starters does not return.

42. NY Giants: Brandon Short-ILB
The Giants have lacked a playmaker in the middle of their defense for years. This coming from a franchise that is known for their LBs. Short should challenge for a starting job this year. he also upgrades the athleticism at the position from last year.

43. San Diego: Darrel Jackson-WR
Although the Chargers signed Conway, they still need playmakers on offense. Plus there is no guarantee that Conway will remain healthy. Now the question is whether Leaf can put it together and play.

44. Baltimore: Chris Redman-QB
Billick is putting the pieces together on offense. The only question is whether banks will come through. Redman will not only be groomed for the future, but he will be Brain's insurance policy in case Banks falters.

45. Green Bay: Na'il Diggs
He will provide speed and athleticism to a defense lacking in both. Should start immediately.

46. New England: Droughns-RB
They are still looking for a replacement for Martin and Edwards. Not sure if Droughns will be the answer, but they hope that he provides the running threat they are looking for. very productive player in college and has the ability to return both punt and kick returns.

47. Oakland: Anthony Lucas-WR
Brown is getting up their in age and Jett is not a WCO WR. Lucas has the speed that Gruden is looking for and has the speed that Al Davis likes.

48. NY Jets: Jabari Issa-DT
Has very good size (6'6" and 300 lbs.) and strength. Should be the run stuffer the Jets need, while also giving a good push up the middle on pass plays.

49. Dallas: Mario Edwards-CB
The loss of Sanders and the signing of McNeil signals problems in big D concerning the defensive backfield. Edwards has very good coverage skills and great speed, he is just inconsistent at times.

50. Detroit: Prentice-RB
The Lion's RBs were horrible last year. They signed Stewart in the off season, but he has a history of injuries. Prentice was extremely productive in college and should provide good depth at the TB position.

51. Carolina: Poteat-CB
Yes, the Panthers signed the CB from Minn. But Poteat is needed because they signed the CB from Minn. They have 3 CBs on their roster as of now and none of the 3 are first rate. This is a position they need to upgrade and Poteat should fit the bill.

52. Seattle: Fred Robbins-DT
Holmgren cannot count on Adams and Kennedy is getting up there in age. Robbins should provide Seattle with a solid man in the middle of their DL.

53. Miami: Alford-OT
The Dolphins were really hoping they would land Ryan Tucker in FA. When the Rams matched, they were stuck without a RT. Alford should be able to come in and start for them as a rookie.

54. Kansas City: Danny Farmer
The Chiefs have lost their 2nd and 3rd WRs to FA or release. they really like Farmers size and feel that he would be a great complement to Alexander and Gonzo. Very productive player in college, especially when McCown was throwing him the ball deep.

55. Minnesota: Claridge-OG
Green will be extremely happy to see this guy sitting here at this pick. He should help ease the loss of Randall McDaniel. Very versatile player, in that he can play OG or OT. He is projected at OG in the pros, but should provide depth at OT as well.

56. Minnesota: Robaire Smith-DE
The Vikings were so desperate for an outside pass rush that they brought Doleman out of retirement. He should provide the defense with a decent pass rush. they will hope that they have better luck with this MSU product after what happened last year with Underwood.

57. Tampa Bay: Reynoch Thompson-OLB
The loss of Nickerson is really going to hurt their defense. The addition of a Thompson will give them another athletic playmaking LB to pair with Brooks.

58. Buffalo: Roman-CB
The Bills lost their #1 CB to FA this year. Although they drafted Winfield last year, you can never have enough quality CBs and Roman may be a steal at this point in the draft. he can also play safety as he did in college.

59. INDY: Goodrich-CB
The Colts stay on the defensive side of the ball. Although they like Poole, he just does not have the height and is not consistent enough in his coverage. Goodrich was considered a high 1st round pick before a mediocre year. he has solid coverage skills and should provide depth for the secondary and may challenge Poole for a starting job.

60. Jacksonville: Coles-WR
Jacksonville absolutely needs a 3rd WR. They just did not have the weapons to go 3 wide last year and stretch defenses. They also love Coles speed (4.35). Should be their #3 WR this year.

61. Tenn: Northcutt-WR
In dire need of offensive speed and a W.R. that can make plays. Dyson only seemed to play well when Thigpen was in the lineup and that was not very often. Tenn lost their 2nd TE, so they are going to have to rely on the WRs for more production. Northcutt not only has speed, but he was very productive in college, catching 88 passes last year.

62. St Louis: Trung Candidate-RB
Inadequate at TB could be their down fall if Faulk is injured. Candidate not only has great speed, but he has very good hands and was extremely productive in college. the Rams would like to look at a DT here, but there are a lot of quality ones left and they should be able to draft one in the 3rd round without a loss of talent. The remaining CBs are not worth taking at this spot.

That is in the end of the 2nd round.

List of remaining quality DTs:

Johnson
Warren
Griffin
Tosi
Meir
