SOME MEDIA NOTES
(March 6)
* The "Media
Notes" column includes a collection of Rams-related info and insights from all
over the net. Read the whole column!... there's always something valuable here. This one
includes remarks on an interview with Coach Martz about the qb situation... Howard Balzer
on the cap effects of trading Trent Green... a post explaining how and why the Rams
can sign Jenkins and then trade him without suffering a cap hit... news about Rams
exhibition games being broadcast in southern cal...some draft notes...and more. Enjoy. ZN.
1. FROM JEREMY. The local St.
Louis TV sports shows on 2 and 4 had interviews with Martz last night. It was very
interesting because I haven't heard him talk much (just at his press conference). He seems
like a nice enough guy.
He mentioned that Warner is definitely the starter, but they want to keep Green just in
case Warner gets hurt. (He mentioned that Warner was pretty lucky last year not to get
hurt). But the Rams have a lot of faith in Germaine, so if there's a really good offer,
they won't pass it up.
And they apparently still play to draft mostly defense. He says the offense will be set
pretty well for the next few years, and wants to get the defense set like that.
He also mentioned he really likes his coaching staff---they all apparently get along very
well.
Also, 2 had a brief interview with Wilbert Montgomery. Apparently, he was the one that
wanted to become TE coach. He'd like to become more versatile so one day he can become an
offensive coordinator.
2 FROM SMITH40. Callers to Howard Balzer's Sunday morning radio show on KFNS have asked
him the Warner/Green question a thousand times. Balzer (who doesn't sugarcoat stuff) has
maintained that no change in the QB situation will happen---that Martz likes Warner and
that Green is the backup.
3. FROM HOWARD BALZER. Green is making $2.9M in salary not $4M. I wish everyone would gert
that straight! He counts $4M against rhe cap, but would count $3.375M against the
cap if traded.
Lee is a specialist and a backup, second string specialist at that. As it works, the
Rams save more against the cap by cutting Lee than they would by trading Green.
Meanwhile, you'd think the mentally deranged Dennis Green would see what it might take to
get Trent Green before trying to signMarino. And after losing Christy and Randall
McDaniel, who will keep Marino from getting killed?
4. FROM GAP: [Re: Jenkins and the Broncos trade]. Someone called the H-Man [Howard Balzer]
on KFNS as I was driving home this evening [March 3]. He said that if you trade a player
within 24 hrs of signing a contract, the bonus goes with the player. It is one of those
lesser known (by us fans) cap loopholes.
5. FROM OC RICH: Good news for So Cal Ram fans!
The LA Times is reporting that KCOP channel 13 will be televising Ram preseason
games this year.
6. FROM JIM FADLER. Kurt's book [from an unindentified news sourse]: "The Rams' Kurt
Warner, who -- as legend has it -- was bagging groceries for $5.50 an hour in an Iowa
supermarket a few years ago, now has bagged a $600,000 contract for a book about his
championship season. `His is a true bags to riches story,' cracked his publisher.
The memoir will be marketed as a sports book and a book aimed at evangelical Christian
followers, among whom Warner counts himself."
7. FROM BUCKY: Some interesting Combine analysis. I was listening to Jim Sabo of
Ourlads today [March 3]. He said the biggest advantage to drafting Janikowski would be
that you could sign him for a keg of beer.
He thought Courtney Brown was THE pick of the draft, both because of his talent and the
position.
He thought the draft was loaded with widereceivers, offensive tackles and linebackers.
He thought "Bubba" Franks was another Kellen Winslow, and could go as early as 6
to Philadelphia.
He loved Chris Hovan---thought he could play tackle, defensive end or nose guard and was
not sure if he would be available when the Jets draft at 16.
He predicted that one of the wide receivers that he thought was a real talent such
as Dez White or Joey Porter would drop into the second round.
He had real questions about Ron Dayne's durability and pass catching ability. He felt he
was banged up in college and it would get worse in the pros. |
