[Summary of Bernie's audio report which can be heard at www.maxfootball.com]:

Zygmunt handled the Jenkins negotiation and evidently bluffed the Broncos into believing the Rams might match the Jenkins offer. The Rams couldn't believe they got two picks for a player they had written off for 2000. The Rams basically got two draft choices for nothing. Sometimes it's better to be more lucky than smart. There were high-fives all around the front office when the deal was done.

Jenkins did some good things for the Rams, but he missed a lot of tackles (including a E.George TD in the SB). His coverage was inconsistent at best, and a liability much of the time. Jenkins biggest fan was DB coach Steve Brown. Brown didn't hide his bias for Jenkins and he told Bush when he first arrived in training camp that he was loyal to Jenkins and didn't want him replaced. Brown also told Bush that he was against bringing in Bush to begin with. Bush was demoralized right off the bat. Armey was aggravated by this because he recruited and signed Bush and felt he should be starting over one of the weak links on the Rams defense. Armey pushed for Bush to play all season, but Brown convinced Giunta to keep playing Jenkins.

Bush is clearly a better overall player than Jenkins and the Rams will be stronger with a Bush/Lyle tandem at the safety positions in 2000. Coady will have an expanded role as the 3rd safety and is one of the fastest players on the team. Armey wanted to work Coady into the rotation last year and he wanted to start Bush over Jenkins. Now thanks to Denver he gets to do that, and gets two draft picks on top of it. Pretty amazing.
