Sure, Martz deserves a great
deal of the credit. But...I can tell you that I've watched Warner play since the Arena league days---after all, he did play my Rattlers in the Arena Bowl. And Kurt has always had a good release and great accuracy. Watching him in the Euro NFL, I thought he caved in a little too much when he was under pressure and made some bad decisions. Not that he didn't play well there. I just thought he could have played better. In 99, Warner gained great confidence as the season progressed. I think he found that 'thing'---that light went on. We've all been there in one way or another. Maybe not in sports but in something you were struggling with and then, bang, it all became crystal clear and your performance went from par to spectacular. So Warner had the tools to begin with. The mental part is what made all the difference. Martz is responsible for putting him in the position to succeed. Warner is responsible for succeeding. It's very much the same with Joe Montana and Steve Young. They had a great system that perhaps made them look a little better than they actually were. They did the rest by executing that system to perfection. Don't forget that it does take all 11 on players playing together to make it work on each side of the ball. Kurt had great support. The O-line did a great job of protecting him all year long. There is a myriad of reason for that. Marshall Faulk is a big one. So is the improvement of the line itself. It all snowballed for them. Warner gained great confidence as the season progressed. I think he found that 'thing'---that light went on. But Kurt has always had uncanny accuracy. And the Rams have a Superbowl Championship. |
