I still see Green leaving before the draft.

First of all, his cap numbers for another team are not all that bad, especially considering what players have been signing for over the last 3 weeks.

More importantly, by waiting and trading him next year, they take the cap hit when they  can stand it the least. The money for 01 is really needed. They need the $3 mill in cap savings in 01 to be able to sign Bruce and  Carter and Warner will require bigger bucks then also.

Trent Green represents an expensive insurance policy. I would not feel that way in a capless world. But, in a world dominated by the cap, you really need to trade him this year. You really need to look 2 years ahead  if you want to be able to manage the cap.

Compare that to the niners, who always looked at the current year, and could give a damn about future years. They were always looking to win the SB in the next year, but guess what? They didn't, and now look pretty bad for it.

So the real question is do they approach the year saying "Damn the torpedos, we are going to win", or saying "We want to win this year and next, and next, and next"?  Would winning 2 SB in a row be great if it meant seeing Bruce and Carter leave as FAs---and the Rams settling back to the middle of the pack in 01? Me, I prefer the always competing for the playoff spot approach vs 1 or 2 good years and then a flame-out.

I'm more worried about an injury to Faulk injury than to Warner.  I think the combo of Warner, Justin, Germaine looks just fine. I see the back ups to Faulk as a major step down compared to the back-ups for Warner. IN fact, without Faulk, we DO stand the chance of Warner getting injured, because nobody is there who can fill his role.

Compare Atlanta and the Jets. One lost its RB, and ended horribly. The other lost its QB, and struggled early, but finished strong. It's was easier to keep running and play good D around a young QB than it was to be 1 dimensional passing and  have no running game whatsoever. And with Justin (who is still not signed), they have a back up QB who is more capable than the one the Jets had.

And who's to say Warner won't be like  a Farve or Plunkett and  start games for 5 or 6 seasons straight? I bring these guys up because he reminds me of them. (and they also went to 2 super bowls each)  The Rams have spent some bucks this year to keep the OL together over the next 3 years, with some OK subs also. Will that help both Warner and Faulk? You bet! However, RB take a lot more hits, and Faulk did miss parts of 2 games this year,  and was rested most of the last game. A larger back to spell him (Shawn Alexander?) would come in very handy.

Finally---I am also greedy. I WANT a top CB, RB and DT in the next draft. The best  way to do that is to get some picks for Green. Then if either Carter or Bruce do end up leaving, there are other players they can fall back on.
