FREE AGENTS & THE CAP. I have always been a Fred Miller fan from draft day to the Super Bowl. I thought that he should have been given a shot at Wayne Gandy much sooner than he was....he is very good with his hands and has excellent leverage.

But at a 5 year $4million a year contract I would pass on him at this stage of putting this team together.

Its more important to me that they sign Kevin Carter and Todd Lyght this offseason than it is to keep Fred Miller.

To my mind the biggest mistake the Rams made with him is the one year tender he got last year. It has been their practice in the past to only tender players a one year contract in their restricted year and I thought last year they should have signed him to a Nutten like deal for three years.

It would seem that they have learned a bit from that experience with the Nutten contract this season.

But Miller is not a  4 million dollar a year player and is no value at that money.  Gruttadauria is not a 3 million a year center either and I think you can bet on seeing Spikes at left tackle with Nutten in the middle next year.

I am  not sure on Tucker at right tackle and don't think or hear that is the plan.

I also think that if anyone gives Billy Jenkins an offer sheet he will be gone as well...they are not going to match and have Bush on the payroll at the same time.

I am very sad to see Charlie Cleamons going and have really liked him as a blitzer but London can easily play nickel linebacker or Leonard Little can move into that slot.

The real key for me is not the role players or the supporting case but can the Rams sign and keep the guys like Bruce, Carter, Warner and Pace....You have to put your cap money into the top guys....

I was amused or chagrined several times when I would hear KFNS commentators talk about how good a cap situation the Rams were in going into this offseason...

NEW COACH MONTGOMERY. The skinny on the RB coach change is that it was Wilbert Montgomery's idea.. He knows Bobby Jackson and when a chance came for Jackson to join the staff  Wilbert volunteered for  tight end duty in order to get a quality guy on the team in a position where he was comfortable.
