I do not know if they should   draft a WR this year---where would they put him? (5 WRs are guarenteed to make the team already; Ike, Holt, AZ, Proehl and Horne). But they will definately draft one pretty high next year.

But this is how I see the WR situation shaking out next year. Bruce will be signed (I am hoping). Proehl will leave, the Rams will not be able to afford him and he wants to play more.

Both Hakim and Horne are RFAs after next season. I see the Rams tendering AZ at a 1st round compensation level, thus keeping him for 1 more season (if someone signs him, even better---we get an extra 1st round pick to draft a replacement).

Horne will be gone. I do not see us tendering him at 1st round money, so we would get no compensation. There are a lot of teams that would greatly overpay for a quality return man (look at Desmond Howard and Darrien Gordon, both signed by OAK coincidently). The Rams just could not afford to tender Horne that type of money without him contributing a great deal on offense. Unfortunately, he will not get the opportunity this year as the 5th WR.

So, I see us with Bruce, Holt and AZ next year, with AZ leaving after the 2001 season.

We will draft 1-2 WRs next year, with 1 of them having a solid history as a return man.

So, to sum up. We will need to replace Horne after next year and AZ after 2001. So the new WR we draft or pickup must be able to return kicks as well as catch.
