on the AOL Board the "Hog" posted some interesting points on the RAMS cap
situation: ] Here's a little tid bit for all you capologists out there. The Rams, under the old cap rules, put "future" transition tags on Ike Bruce and Kevin Carter when they signed in 1995 and 1996, so even though the rules are different now, the Rams still get to use transition tags on BOTH in 2001 unless they sign...even if they have to keep the tag on Lyght. If they sign Lyght for a year, then renegotiate to a long term deal next year, they will have THREE transition and one franchise tag in 2001. That means they can franchise Warner, and transition Jones Bruce, their other major FAs next year, even if they don't sign Carter as planned. It also puts more pressure on Carter to sign, since he knows the transition tag pays less than a franchise tag would. From the looks of it, the Rams should have no worries about losing a star player until 2002 at the very earliest---and by then Carter, Bruce, Faulk, Pace, Carter, Jones, Lyght, Timmerman,Warner, Holt, Wistrom, Tucker, Conwell, Nutten will still be signed, and guys like Holcombe, Bly, Fletcher, Hakim, Horne, Williams will be restricted at best. They will have to resign Lyle, McCleon, Farr, Bush, and Collins...but it looks like Zygmunt and Armey have things in awesome shape for the forseeable future. Putting those future tags on Bruce and Carter may have been the only smart thing Steve Ortmeyer ever did...but then again it was probably Zygmunt's idea. |
