With Whiner week in high
gear, it seems appropriate that the latest winner of the "Boneheaded Rams
Statement Award" is a long-time Whiner apologist---er, fan---who just
happens to double as the sports anchor on the most popular local nightly news
broadcast, and is also the co-host of a weekly 49ers pregame show. As I (and others) have documented, the Rams have long been an object of derision out here, as well as a target for the litany of tired one-liners and cheap shots that are often aimed at a losing team. But our latest winner, under the guise of actual *reporting*, is blazing new trails in stupidity! Our special Whiner week "BRSA" winner---on-airsports director for the Bay Area's 10 O'clock News---Mark Ibanez!! At the very end of last night's broadcast, (the final segment being about the status of Steve Young), anchorman Dennis Richmond asked Ibanez if HE thought Steve Young should start Sunday. Ibanez responded that there was really no *reason* to play Steve Young this week.....why would they even *bother* to start him? Which prompted Richmond---apparently not being oblivious to the fact that the Rams are undefeated and in first place in the Niner's own division---to ask, "so the Rams aren't as tough as they've been playing?" Fair question, no? Ibanez' winning response: "I THINK THEY'RE JUST AN ILLUSION AT THIS POINT." *GASP* Yes, Rams fans, it's time to wake up from your mass hallucination--- our mystical, illusory Rams, led by Kurt "Houdini" Warner---the NUMBER ONE RATED QB in the league---are merely an ILLUSION! A simple bit of sleight o' hand! Perhaps mystical Mark got confused because he heard we had a "WIZARD" of some kind on the team.... Perhaps he was just doing his Doug Henning impersonation...? But it seems that with a simple wave of a magic wand, we could erase the Rams' 100 - 27 scoring discrepancy.....their top-five rated offense AND defense.....their first-place status.....and all the other little omens that had us (and Las Vegas) fooled into thinking this was, like, a REAL team or something! Some would suggest that the actual "illusion" is Ibanez as any sort of sports authority..... So congratulations to Mark "Merlin" Ibanez---this week's "Boneheaded Rams Statement Award" winner! |
