Kurt Warner
is coming along just nicely. He's now regularly checking for his 3rd option, and I
don't think it will be long before he sees the entire field. He still takes a little
longer than Trent to find the open option, but this may be due to the fact the he looks
for the long ball a lot.
Kurt still needs to learn the "mega" fake to hold the safeties. Trent Green was
pure poetry when executing this aspect of the game.
The game against the Falcons was no indication of Warners progress as he dropped straight
back almost exclusively. I will say this, however---the QB draw he ran was absolutely
perfect! He sold the pass like no other, then ran an easy 5 yards into the
endzone. Warner went back, looked right like he always does, then, Boom! turned on the
jets to the endzone. If you call those jets! Atlanta was totally stunned.
IMHO, this game was almost too easy for Warner. He didn't have to do anything special. He
didn't have to sell the fake to hold the safeties. But, he showed just how accurate
a passer he really is. He hit Torry Holt, then Isaac Bruce with long passes. In fact, if
Ricky Proehl had stickum, Warner would have been 3 for 3 from 35 yards or more.
And talk about accuracy with that longball. Still, consider that he went deep so many
times because of the play of the O-line. They were absolutely outstanding. Pace made
Chuckie suffer today, and you didn't hear boo from Kearney. In fact, I can't recall
a single play by the Falcon's entire D-line. Miller was superb, which may put to rest
the Tucker rumors for the time being. Kudos to the O-line for a magnificent job. They were
awesome!
Warner also had to do the following. On one play, he had to sell the long ball to get the
ball to Hakim for a first down. Nice catch Az! He had to sell the long ball to get the
ball to Marshall, who used his unparalleled talent to score a TD, and do the "Dirty
Bird". See ya!
He had to be patient to get the ball to both Holt and Bruce for TDs.
But what impressed me most about Kurt Warner, was his pocket presence. Whenever a
D-lineman came within arms reach, he shifted over a yard or two and prompty
completed a pass to the open man (except Proehl, of course). It is this
pocket presence that will take Kurt Warner far into the annals of Rams history, and
I'm convinced that we will come to love him like Roman Gabriel himself.
He has weapons like none other in the game today, and he shows a maturity that is
comparable to the likes of John Elway.
Rams in the Super Bowl ? No, I won't go there. But look for me in week 17! I WILL be
very vocal!
PS: Robert Holcombe is looking more and more polished every week. He made some good
blocks, gained some good tough yards inside, and was wide open catching a couple of
passes out of the backfield. Faulk looks to be in game shape now so look for
him to start having some really big games from here on in
