Warner report: Did you notice on the longer passes the odd pocket formation I talked about weeks ago [on the zine's "Quarterback Watch Page"] where Pace attacks, Nutten only drops a step , the center 2 and Timm. and Miller play it regular? So instead of a pocket it is more of a fish hook with Miller the pointy part of the barb and Pace the eye of the hook. This allows Warner to do his soon to be patented pocket crab move where he steps to one side or the other (usually left) to avoid the rush. The most space is there to the left and Warner has confidence in Nutten having played behind him the longest (including the Europe league) so he knows what to expect from him. The weakness of this formation appears when the DE tries to split Pace/Nutten, causing Pace to block down allowing a secondary type to blitz (that happened when Green went down). In this formation, Pace is holding the line of scrimmage and not a steadily decreasing space, as would be the case if he were backing up and in. "Warner does not step up he just throws from where he is at." That's not my remark, that was Howie Long, who was vastly impressed with Warner. "Old school QB" was another of his comments. That crab step goes with his image. He should get a stalk of hay to chew on like a toothpick. I have seen him get knocked around before and he does not get flustered, he just gets up (so far even with busted ribs). The hay would really annoy some of his opponents, such as the urbanite camera junkie 49ers. PS: Warner will get a new contract. He wants to be in St. Louis because of the medical facilities availible for his son. The Rams will reward Warner with a large signing bonus to make up for this year (it's a done deal). Nothing gets signed till later in the season but the paperwork is already done with a theoretical 5 year agreement in place. |
