There have been many
inaccurate posts on how many were rushing Frerotte on the plays leading up to, and
including the 4th and 26 disaster. I looked at the tape and here is how it went from when the Lions received the kickoff: **1st and 10: Illegal procedure on Detroit **1st and 15: 4 man rush, Wistrom pressured Frerotte, pass complete for a 1st down. **1st and 10: 4 man rush, Carter sacks Frerotte, fumble, loss of 14. **2nd and 24: 4 man rush, pass complete to RB for 6 yds. **3rd and 18: 5 man rush, including Jenkins on a delayed blitz. Farr gets sack on a stunt, beats the center clean. Jenkins was non-factor in the sack. **4th and 26: 4 man rush, Detroit keeps TE and RB in to block. 7 blocking 4= no pressure. Carter for some reason was moved inside to DT and didn't get off the line of scrimmage. The Rams were getting good pressure from their front 4 on every play all the way up until the final play. They never used a 3 man rush. They sent 5 one time. At no time did they rush 6. That's not to say they shouldn't have rushed more than 4 on 4th down. I would have liked to have seen them send 5 or 6, but Detroitwas set for maximum protection (7 blockers) and it might not have mattered. The bottom line is this: 7 RAMS COULDN'T COVER 3 LIONS. McCleon reacted late, was caught flat-footed and Jenkins was late getting over from deep middle. Why Jenkins was in that position to begin with is another mystery. He's got to be the worst cover DB we have. The defense was poorly designed and executed on that 4th down play and it cost us a victory. |
