Well, another home game against an unwitting opponent, and in typical 1999 fashion, the Rams demolished the Carolina Panthers 35-10. You'd think,  however, after listening to/reading post-game comments from Panthers players, that these guys have little or no respect for the Rams.

While I'll concede the score was not indicative of complete domination by one team against another (in fact, I thought the Panthers played relatively well offensively), it amazes me that Panthers quarterback Steve Beuerlein doesn't "think there's           any doubt" the Panthers can beat the Rams. Is that because he was running for his life the entire game and didn't have time to realize what was happening? Although the Rams sacked Beuerlein "just" five times yesterday, only his pocket awareness prevented at least another half-dozen beatings. Maybe if they had pummeled him a few more times he wouldn't have had the audacity to "think there's any doubt." Oh well, I'm sure he's just posturing for the next time these two teams meet (in three weeks).

As for those Rams fans (as well as the normal  Anti-Rams) who believe yesterday was symptomatic of  what has ailed the Rams lately (i.e., inability to establish the run, defense yielding too many yards       via the air, costly turnovers by Warner), I'll take this kind of "sub-par" performance with the same end result any Sunday. Does anybody recall games in  previous seasons (e.g., against the Minnesota Vikings and Panthers last year) when certain victory was snatched by the jaws of defeat? Because the Rams have not overwhelmed their last three opponents offensively (as in the first six games of  the season) doesn't mean they have fallen back to previous ie. 98 form. Only one team can lay claim to having played consistently solid football in each and every game this year...the St. Louis Rams. Though they didn't dominate the Detroit Lions and Tennessee Titans in their two road losses, the Rams played them (both playoff-caliber opponents) tough and had a legitimate chance to win both contests.    On the other hand, teams like The Buffalo Bills,  Detroit Lions Inc., Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins Ltd., Inc.  have each played games in which they played to the        level of the competition. And in certain cases these teams lost to totally inferior opponents.

Speaking of inferior opponents, it appears the Rams can score a 1999 "double whammy" by beating the lifeless 49ers next Sunday. With the early line already placing the Rams as seven to seven and a half point favorites, it must be unbearable for SF fans and their Anti-Ram friends to think of themselves as the prohibitive underdogs in this clash versus the Rams. When was the last time the 49ers were this    heavy an underdog at Candlestick/3Com Park? I'd  imagine it was the glory days from 1977-80, when the 49ers were compiling a 15-47 record. By the way,  though I expect the 49ers to consider this week's  game their most important contest of the season (and to play with a renewed fervor), I predict the Rams will trounce this former juggernaut 45-13,  showing mercy (again!) at the end of the game so as  not to run the score over 50.

"What comes around goes around." The only thing I cannot understand is why some SF fans say things like "wait until  December when the Rams true colors show." Is that after or before Jeff Garcia/Steve Stenstrom, or better yet, JeffHostetler/Pat Barnes, lead the 49ers on a seven-game winning streak to finish 10-6  and make the playoffs?

Let's just hope that genius Bill Walsh knows how to spot the next Kurt Warner.
