For all the talk about the souped up offense with all the talented skill players and the genius of Mike Martz... the most significant difference between this team and the '98 Rams may be Ike Bruce.

The game plans have been excellent, the preparation with a first year QB has been tremendous. The execution of a complicated offense with all the shifting and the multiple formations, it has been flawless.

A lot has been made of the Rams new firepower on offense. Warner is hitting 6 or 7 receivers each week. Each week a different skilled player steps up... Faulk, Holt, Hakim...

And much has been made of Kurt Warner's awesome start. He's leading the league in QB rating and he has been far better than even Calvin could have predicted.

But...

Ike Bruce is unstoppable.  The Rams know it...

Ike is still the man. Last week after the game, Bruce said, "Az is the man." Keith Lyle was quick to correct him. "No, Ike's still the man."

At halftime after a superhuman first half against the Bengals, Dick Vermeil shrugs it off and says, "Well that's what we expect him to do. He's a good player."

In the Cincinnatti game, for example, Ike took the Rams down the field on successive drives when the game was in the balance and after the Bengals sent them to the sidelines after three and out in their first possession. In the red zone, the Bengals rolled the coverage to Bruce's side and Hakim was left wide open.

There's no question, the Rams have a lot more playmakers on offense this year. But more than the diversity, more than the quarterbacking, more than the X's and O's or the coaching... it's the Reverand that's driving this thing.
