THE NFCW CROWN. As a "converted" Ram fan, that is a 1995 and afterward Ram fan, I am greatly pleased and tickled pink. Seeing those 42-10 drubbings by the Niners and others really makes me appreciate this season. As a long term football fan I know every team has its ups and downs, but I haven't been able to experience those ups and downs as close together as I have with the Rams.

I don't know if posters outside STL know what this really means.

The Cardinals football team was in St. Louis 28 years. Only 1 division title, only 2 playoff appearences, (don't count that strike year appearence, they got blown out anyhow),  NOT ONE home playoff game, and ZERO playoff wins.

And yet,  guys like Jim Hart and Dan Dierdorf are held in high esteme in the coummunity. I arrived in St. Louis in 1981, before they retired, but they were past their prime, and the team was again lucky to hit .500 in a season.

But the fans LOVED those guys. And still do. Ask any fan over 35 who they are, and you would have thought they won 2 or 3 super bowls, not just 1 division title.

In 1982, the baseball Cardinals won the World Series. Two players, in particular, caught the hearts of the fans---Ozzie Smith and Willie McGee. Willie just retired this year, to standing ovations, even though he came back to play his last 2 years with declining skills. But the fans still appreciated every thing he did for the team from 82-90.

I don't even have to mention the cult of Mark McGwire.

As this season goes with the Rams, and things like home playoff games and  (hopefully)  victories happen, some guys on the team will become the new fans's special players. My choice---Warner, Bruce, Faulk. They are obvious, but also have the low key approach off the field, and don't ham it up too much on the field.

Maybe Torry Holt or Timmerman can grow into that kind of role as they become more familar to the public. Kevin Carter also.

If this team does go to the super bowl, all these guys will be in the unofficial St. Louis "sports hall of fame".

This town really embraces a winner, and stays with them for many years afterward. And so they will become the ST. LOUIS RAMS, a team that the city can really claim, not a team just playing there.

I'm not saying this to be rude or mean to the loyal So Cal fans out there----just pointing out some things as I see them.

BTW---ON BLUES FANS. I didn't even want to get into the Blues fans---I mean slamming beers in a parking lot on a 20 degree night at the old arena, standing in those long lines for the bathroom choking in the cigarette smoke, yelling and cursing at the players and coach from the upper stands, like they could really be heard down on the ice. You're taking your life in your own hands just getting into the upper stands up those steep steps, having that damn fog horn bomb your eardrums on a score....well you get the picture.

Nope, don't want to go there. BTW, aren't the Blues in first place?

SUNDAY'S GAME. With a 5 yr old and a 9 yr old in the house, watching football for 3 hrs is a bit of a challenge. Usually I have to do a few things for them, settle some arguments, etc. Thank goodness for VCR's. That's how I do most of my real analysis.

Given that, when did I think they had it won? Well, I turned to my wife in the 3rd quarter and said, "These guys are going to screw around and lose this game." The next play was the long TD catch/run by Jeffers. My wife just looks at me, responding to my premonition, and says, "They sure are!" (with a hint of disgust in her voice)

Luckily Bly got the INT, which sealed it.

BTW, some game time observations from my wife--->

- The Rams cause a lot of fumbles, but they never seem to get them

- They can't sack this guy today

- Go, Go, Go (in response to some runs by Hakim and many runs by Faulk)

- Get him!! YEAHHHHH (applied to the sacks in the 4th qtr.)

SOME THINGS WE WILL NEVER HAVE TO HEAR AGAIN.

*losingest team of the nineties

*longest active streak of not going to the playoffs

* stories on how Rich Brooks got the shaft in St Louis while he watches the game from his box

* the streak

* references to the Roman Empire and the Niners in the same sentence

* St Louis is only a baseball town

* DV will be the first coach fired this year

* The Rams don't deserve to be on prime time

* The Rams have players that could go to the Pro-Bowl? (usually followed with a laugh)

* Wonder who the Rams will take with the 6th pick in the draft?

* The announcers wondering who the Rams back-up QB is

* Same Old Rams
