He was calling in from Memphis where he is covering the Liberty Bowl on Friday. He mentioned the irony in the matchup being the Colorado State Rams vs. the Mississippi State (Golden) Eagles. Rams vs. Eagles. Get it?

1. Even though we don't have that much to play for other than the oft-mentioned individual records, it would be really nice to head into the playoffs as one of the teams with the NFL's best record at 14-2.

2. The Rams have the intent to play hard and to play to win.

3. Caller (Forrester): 1. Comment. The Rams have a good St. Louis fan base. 2. Marshall Faulk. Very smart. Knows when to cut. Almost impossible to hit him head on which has benefited him in remaining injury free.

4. Caller (John): Mentioned that Howard is 11-4-1 on the H-Bomb (based on a 17-week season, obviously). What does Howard think of the Tennessee Titans? AFC is wide open. You have to favor a team that has a bye week. Kansas City and Seattle both at 9-6 and Buffalo are all good teams who are quite likely capable of going into say a Jacksonville, Indianapolis, or Nashville and pulling off an upset.

Howard said St. Louis is known for its strong pro football fan base. When the Cardinals were in St. Louis, the fans were nuts about the Cardinals. Even during the 8 years when there was no football in St. Louis, radio shows would get several calls all the time regarding questions and comments about professional football.

5. John also asked, "what's the toughest place to play in the AFC?" Certainly, Kansas City is the toughest place to play. May have only one home playoff game, though, if they win the AFC West. Jacksonville can be tough but don't know how tough it will be this week with Jay Fiedler at QB in place of the injured Mark Brunnell.

Tennessee is obviously tough as can be Seattle.

The Indianapolis fans are starting to turn it around as well.

6. Caller (mjr007): With Bernie's article in the Post Dispatch this morning and the likelihood of a match up against the Vikings, it's been suggested that the Rams play Leonard Little at outside linebacker behind Wistrom and attack Jeff George's blind side. The brilliant caller mentioned Kansas City's success against George while with both Oakland and Minnesota. Howard responded, the Rams would likely be in a lot of nickel and dime packages. Probably see a lot of Little and Clemons who is also a good blitzer. Even suggested that the Rams take a 15 yard penalty for a late hit just to let George know early that you're there and that you're going to be there. Getting into George's head is a key as it is with Moss. Moss isn't interested in getting hit. He just wants to catch the ball. Their defense isn't going to stop the Rams. We need to knock George and Moss off their game. Perhaps give up a big play to Moss early but knock the crap out of him to take him off his game.

7. Caller (Coop): Performance of Tony Banks gives us a draft pick from Baltimore? As far as Howard knows, the 7th round pick next year is not conditional.

8. Jerry Rice. Rice feels that the Niner organization owes it to him for him to be able to determine on his own when to retire. Howard: Tough decisions to make for coaches and owners. You've got Rice and Dan Marino who have fallen off their game quite a bit. Marino in particular since coming back from injury has made a tremendous number of mistakes and bad decisions. Jackie Smith basically said "hog wash." Players don't have any say in when they can or can't play. It's going to be up to Jimmy Johnson or perhaps even Dave Wannstedt to make the decision on Marino. Dolphins may be better next year when they get Tony Martin and Cecil Collins back.
