Having been knocked down by them enough I learned:

The proper stance for a defensive lineman as demonstrated by Ray Agnew on how to and how not to by D. Farr.

A square level stance is essential. Watch Agnew, first he stands upright, with his feet parallel, no wider than his shoulders. Then he bends his knees till his forearms rest on his thighs. Agnew will keep his back straight (hard to see cause he is a slob and his shirt is untucked*see note below*) and his head up with his eyes looking straight ahead. (unless the cheerleaders are jumping about then it takes him a couple of tries to get his eyes straight after yet another long dull TV time-out)

>From there Agnew reaches forward till both of his hands are on the ground. Eventually Agnew will have only one hand on the ground but he puts both down to ensure a feel for proper placement and to make sure his shoulders are level. Level shoulders are very important as not to tip the offensive slob off as to which way Agnew is going to rush.

When he does lift up his hand it will go slightly above his thigh with his had open and facing forward fingers pointed up. Note Agnew never reaches forward far enough that his hips are not aligned directly above his feet.

When Agnew is set like this his heels will be off the ground with 3/4 of his weight on the balls of his feet. Agnew will also flex his legs so that his hips are slightly lower than his shoulders.

Agnew, unlike Farr will not move his feet backwards after he places his hands on the ground. (Farr gets his feet too far behind his hips cause he moves them after he puts his hand down). Agnew is much heavier and slower.  If Farr would not get himself off balance he would have more sacks.

The only difference between Agnew's stance and say Carter's is that instead of having his feet parallel Carter will have his inside foot back just a bit so the toe of the inside foot is even with the heel of the outside allowing him to move left or right easier.

I realize this Farr v.Agnew stance stuff is nit-picky and most of the time Farr is doing it right, however,  being able to waddle the 40 in just over ten seconds and still have enough breath left over to kick over a light plastic bowling pin make me a qualified critic.

Okay the special teams coverage is average but several of us have pointed that out since preseason. Next week I will pick on the linebackers.

*note on Agnew's untucked shirt*

with much shuffling and eye rolling Agnew claims his shirt is untucked because he swears its easier for it to get tangled up in an opponents hand, getting the holding call, however some say it is so the coach types can't see if he is sucking in his gut and holding his back straight in his stance cause the hanging shirt blocks the view on tape*

we believe ya Ray!!! ;)

Go Rams!
