There is a much bigger ISSUE wrapped up in the loss of Trent Green. An ISSUE that will affect our beloved franchise like no other in the coming years. An ISSUE that will tell all about what's really going on with management and Coach Dick Vermeil.

The ISSUE is whether the Rams Brass will cut Dick Vermeil slack this year because he unfortunately lost Trent Green?

SCENARIO #1. Now, if the Rams Brass really thinks that Vermeil has been effective and important in what's gone on this offseason, they should realize they have a valuable coach that should be given every opportunity to succeed. After all, it's thru his leadership and sound football knowledge that the ship is turning and turning quickly.

In this scenario, if we have a losing record but look improved and tough, they would keep Vermeil. The record could be as bad as 4-12 or 5-11 and they still should want to keep him if we look "on the right track".

And further by cutting Dick slack for 1999 would mean he'd be here in 2000 too. That means we'd cast our fate with him until at least 2001. A scary thought if he's not a winner.

Plus, at some point, the Rams Brass would probably elevate Vermeil to the G.M. position, where he could continue to work his team building magic thru talent acquisition.

We'd be Vermeil's team til many here are on Social Security.

SCENARIO #2. But, if the Rams Brass really thinks that Vermeil has not been an important leader.  That he's merely been pretty much an implementer of the Rams Brass' strategies. And that, even there, others have really been the prime movers of even the implementation of the Rams Brass' strategies. That the main reason they kept him is that damn salary. And that like Yeltsin he's an O.K. figurehead.

In this scenario, any excuse that the Rams Brass have to get rid of Vermeil will be pounced on. He could go near .500 and they would say that he's not turned us around fast enough. And we need to go in another direction. After all, his salary buyout would be palatable after this year, where they couldn't see their way clear financially last year.

And, in this scenario, Vermeil wouldn't be kicked upstairs to the G.M. position. Because he isn't the man there. Armey is.

No slack for Vermeil.

SUMMARY, The underlying issue is what do they really think of Vermeil going into this seaason? Has he been our leader? Or has he been merely a follower and delegator?

For once you'll hear me say........time will tell!
