The Week of January 28

The shooting victim is Valerie. Alison, relieved that it isn't Jamal, tries to comfort him but he is beginning to blame himself for Valerie's injury. Frank arrives and the EMTs take Val to GH. At GH, Karen and Chris struggle to keep her alive, but it is to no avail she dies. Garcia arrives and questions Jamal who takes the blame for her death. Alison, Livvie and Jack explain the truth, but it is obvious that Jamal is deeply affected by what happened. As Alison reaches out to him, he pulls away saying it was his fault.

The 4 angels are shocked to learn that someone they care about is going to die soon and that they will act as intermediaries to their journey to Heaven. Ed sends the ladies back to Earth, leaving Rafe behind. Angry to know who the 5th chair belongs to, Rafe lashes out believing its meant for Alison. Ed pulls out a small television and tells him that he can't change Alison's future but he can see what is happening to her in the present. Rafe witnesses the discovery of Valerie's death by Jamal and Alison. Ed tells him that Valerie's death will affect Alison's "journey" as will it affect Rafe's. He is issued an ultimatum: knowing what he knows, does Rafe have the guts to keep on living knowing that the chair will be filled by someone he knows.

Ed repeats his ultimatum: return to Earth or stay in Heaven. To help Rafe make his decision he shows him again what is going on in GH and the aftermath of Valerie's death. Moments later, Rafe rushes into the hospital desperate to see Alison. Livvie stops him and demands to know why he is there, he doesn't belong. Rafe disagrees and says he made a decision and he needs to be with Alison, she needs him. Jack comes to Livvie's defense and together the two force Rafe to leave, frustrated.

Jamal continues to blame himself for Valerie's death and pushes Alison away. He believes his self-centered actions, and not giving Val the attention she needed caused her mental demise. Each time he looks at Alison, he reveals, he is reminded about how selfish he was and how he killed Valerie. Alison runs out of GH upset.

Alison returns home to what has become a crime scene. In entering the apartment, she finds Rafe cleaning up. He tells her that he just didn't want her to face it alone. Alison breaks down and runs into Rafe's arms, crying.

After a long sleep Alison wakes up and panics when she sees remnants of Val's death in the apartment. In an emotional speech, (wonderfully acted by Erin Hershey!) Alison admits that she feels useless, unable to help Jamal when he needs her most. Rafe pulls her into a hug, telling her that he's there for her. Jack walks in and witnesses the embrace and reveals that Jamal is missing. When Ali leaves the room, he confronts Rafe regarding his presence in the apartment. Rafe refuses to leave and says he stayed the night to make sure that she wasn't alone. The conversation cuts off when Alison returns to the room, the three now joined by Livvie decide to look for Jamal.

Jack, Livvie, Alison and Rafe arrive at the Recovery Room and they still have not been able to locate Jamal. Rafe insists that they find him, because he can't be the one that dies. The three, shocked, ask what he means, but he says that he just slipped and the words came out wrong. Alone with Rafe, Livvie and Alison want to know if he knows something they don't (seeing as he's an angel). He lies saying that he doesn't know anything in advance anymore. Jack returns and says there was a Jamal sighting at a local bar. When Jack and Livvie suggest that Jamal might not want to see her, she says she'll be back at their place.

Rafe asks if Alison wants him to return with her, but she tells him no. She says that she needs to realize that Jamal and Rafe won't always be around to protect her. Rafe insists he just wants to be her friend, and Ali calls his bluff. Holding back tears, she tells him that she knows he wants to be more than friends- he's in love with her. She tells him that she's stopped making excuses for his behavior toward her, and says that it will never happen between them. She declares her love for Jamal as Rafe listens, heartbroken. He tells her that he understands, Ali leaves. Rafe looks up to the Heavens and asks for guidance, wanting to know if the whole thing is over or if... (he trails off)

Casey and Rafe bond at the Recovery Room, as they discuss who's going to "kick the bucket." Casey insists that she has no ties to anyone in the town and will turn up the "obnoxious charm" to get Frank to stop caring. She basically calls Ricky a possible noncommittal sexual relationship. She asks Rafe if having sex as an angel is the same as before when they were alive. In a hilarious scene, Rafe uncomfortably tells her that he's been busy and hasn't had sex since he was allowed back as a human. Casey asks him if he supposed to be looking out for his "good friend" why is he always at the Recovery Room alone? She tells him to listen to her advice and he should be with his "friend" now, because their time goes fast and you need to make the most of it. They are all lucky and have been given a second chance. He tells Casey that he thinks staying away from Alison is what is right. She puts him in his place, asking him what makes him think that Alison doesn't still need him?

Jamal blames Alison for pushing him to throw Valerie out of the apartment. He tells her that he's feeling more and more like they aren't good anymore. He says that them being together has cost two people their lives, and its not going to work. Every time he walks through the door, he's going to think about Valerie bleeding. Shocked and upset, Alison asks if he wants to move. He tells her not THEM, and she gets the hint. He says they should never have gotten back together and there is no good reason for them to be together anymore. Upset, Ali asks him to give it a couple of days, but he refuses saying that his mind is made up. Alison tries to make him realize that Valerie was disturbed and that if it wasn't them that had died, someone else would have. Jamal says that if they hadn't hooked up, none of that would have happened. He tries to walk away, but Alison attempts to stop him, he pushes her and she screams, falling to the ground.

Jamal tries to help Alison to her feet, but she trembles and struggles out from him helping her. Rafe storms in, having heard Alison scream. Jamal screams at Rafe that's its not his damn business, but his hold on Alison and the look in Alison's eyes sending Rafe reeling. He choke-holds Jamal, telling him that if he ever hurts Alison he will kill him, as Alison looks on crying and begging them to stop.
