Starting a Railroad
Look for a large city that can supply a constant load passengers and mail
Next, find a city of a reasonable size that is close to the large one and connect them by a single track line (later you can upgrade to double track as traffic grows)
Build the smallest station you can that covers all houses and industries & don't forget to build sanding towers, water towers (not unless using steam locomotives) & a roundhouse.
Next click the "buy locomotive" button and look through to see which locomotive has the cheapest fuel and repair cost and buy it (don't buy electric without electric tracks)
Set up your route and carry as many car loads you can to the other city (ie.4 mail 2 passenger to Toronto & 4 passenger 2 mail back to Buffalo)
As you gain cash you can buy more locomotives, and start to build branch lines to get raw materials for industries so, then they can produce a product. (ie. the coal & iron ore mines to make steel to take to the tool & die shop in buffalo, which comes back to Toronto as goods)
Next you can start to gain more cash and pay off loans
Finally you can start to build more railroad branches to other town
