Idiosyncrasies of the Species...

So how do you know if you are the significant other of a Railfan, anyway? It definitely doesn't take too many clues! But for those who've just been introduced to this species with that oh, so harmless: "I like trains..." confession, this page is for you! Read through all the little quirks that I've seen demonstrated by my Railfan and find out how yours measures up... If you find yourself agreeing with at least 3 traits within each category-- Congratulations! You are the Significant Other of a Railfan!! I know that Railfans can be meticulous and specific, so add to the list by emailing me with one of your Railfan's lovable quirks: [email protected].

One of my Railfan's models:
SP 9757, a GP60 kitbashed from an Athearn GP50.
The Railfan's Habitat:
1. There are countless model trains...Boxes and boxes bearing the names: Athearn, Genesis, Lionel, etc.
2. There are at least 2 or more albums with a hundred engines in numeric order.
3. There is a calendar devoted to your Railfan's favorite road.
4. There are at least one or two framed pictures of engines on the wall-- they're usually "Roster Shots."
5. There are different signs on the wall in reference to trains, i.e. "No Smoking, Unless You're A (Picture of an Engine)."
6. There are different memorabilia "borrowed" from an engine, ie. number boards.
7. There are subsciptions to various train magazines, ie Trains, Pacific Rail News, SP Trainline, etc.
8. If the room/house doesn't already have a train layout, plans are in the works to have one in the future.
9. There are train magazines in the bathroom, in the living room, in the bedroom, and anywhere within reach of someone sitting down.
10. There are train videos/DVDs by every TV and chances are, there's a train video/DVD in the VCR/DVD player as we speak.
11. In the freezer, there are rolls of frozen film-- "this keeps it in better condition."
12. On the computer, sites devoted to modelling trains and trains are bookmarked.
13. On the computers links are sites that trace an engine's exact location at any time during the day or night.
14. There are thousands of slides of "roster shots," probably bought on-line on E-bay.

On The Railfan's Person (at any given time, you will find on the Railfan...):
1. at least one camera.
2. usually more than one camera: a digital camera, a 35mm camera, a camera with slide film, sometimes a camcorder, sometimes a tape recorder, sometimes numerous disposable cameras.
3. rolls of film-- 35 mm and slide film.
4. a scanner.
5. a writing instrument, to specify what's on a roll of film.
