The Railfan Neanderthalensis, commonly known as a "Railfan" or a "Foamer," is derived from the Homosapien Species. Despite thousands of years of evolution, it's lineage can be directly traced to the Mammal Kingdom. It is an organism that cannot derive energy from sunlight or from organic/inorganic chemicals alone, but must obtain direct energy emitted by Trains.

Preferred Common Name:Railfan Neanderthalensis
Other Names:Foamer, Railroad Enthusiast
Lineage:Human, Homo Sapiens, Mammals
***My Specific Railfan:of the Espee Neanderthalensis Family

Through use of its six senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, and most importantly its "sixth train sense," the Railfan does not only survive on, but thrives on these Trains. There are thousands of different energy sources out there and each Railfan is specific to which type they may ingest or feast on. My Railfan's survival is co-dependent on the Southern Pacific Road, or in its abbreviated form, the Espee. Through my countless hours of observation and research, I've discovered that the "Road" that each Railfan is co-dependent on has a direct correlation to his or her origin of habitat (of course, there are exceptions to this). My Railfan can be originally found in the Southern California region, specifically from the Rain Forests of Central Los Angeles. There happened to be a large concentration of Espee in that area because of what's known to non-Railfans as Taylor Yard.

My Railfan eventually migrated to Northern California and has settled in the Rain Forests of Oakland, situated between mileposts 13.6 and 6.0. Despite the love and nourishment that I give to my Railfan, he is not too happy and content without the constant contact and interaction with others like him. There are "families" of Railfans out there that come together on a routine basis- most on a daily basis- some, on a minute to minute basis. My Railfan is in constant contact with those in the Espee Neanderthalensis Family, thanks to modern technology: the World Wide Web.

The Railfan species is highly evolved and has developed several methods of tracing their energy sources. My Railfan has created a (yahoo groups) web site for others to come together and what else-- chat incessantly about their favorite energy source: the Espee. They post messages about their favorites and swap stories about a time when they saw one or most importantly, captured one on film. Most recently, my Railfan has developed a trace web site , which has allowed him and others in the Espee Family to trace where each Espee engine may be at any given moment. The creation of this trace web site was an extremely joyous occasion for the Espee Family and I was fortunate enough to witness it!

Sample Energy Sources: Espee Locos

Left: An SP 9813 of the SD 70M kind. I've come to really like the wide cab feature of these engines

Right: An SP 8311 of the SD 40T-2 kind. (My Railfan's Favorite!)
