WELCOME TO:

The Brigadier General Evander McIver Law Homepage

Born August 7, 1836

Died October 31, 1920

General Law died on Halloween 1920 but his life and his service are shrouded in mystery.  Some of his personal papers have been a recent source of controversy and this webpage is dedicated to his life and service in within the Confederate Army.  I want the reader to note that I do not hold a PhD in History.  However, I am a high school history teacher with a bachelors degrees in History, Political Science and Social Studies Education.  Thank you Bowling Green State University for providing me with the best history education in the country!!  So I am no slouch and I am confident that I can provide an open-minded reader with enough information and insight to arouse their interest.  I try to read and learn about every aspect of the Civil War that I can and I feel that first-hand accounts are vital to our understanding of the conflict.  Law was major player during the battle of Gettysburg because he took over for Major General John Bell Hood when Hood was wounded.  Therefore it was Law who commanded one of Robert E. Lee's key divisions on the attack on the Union left on July 2, 1863.  More on this later!!  Hopefully this website will catch your interest and if you wish to contact me, have something you wish to add to this webpage or want to chat about General Law  please email me at the address below.  I love the Civil War and I invite discussion about that as well.

Not for fame or reward,
Not for place or for rank,
Not lured by ambition,
Or goaded by necessity,
But in Simple
Obedience to Duty
As they understood it,
These men suffered all,
Sacrificed all,
Dared all--and died.
(Inscription on the monument to the dead of the Confederate States Army, Arlington National  Cemetery, Washington, D.C.)
