Avalanche Gulch

This is the view for traditional route climbers as they approach Helen Lake. Mt. Shasta's Avalanche Gulch route is one of the most climbed high altitude mountain routes in the Cascades, with conditions sometimes becoming over crowded on mid-season weekends. This view clearly shows trails left and right ascending to the curved rock shelf defining Helen Lake. Above you can see the rocky formation called "The Heart". The route typically takes climbers to the right of this rock field and up to The Red Banks. The climb from Helen Lake to the Red Banks is 2,500 feet. Misery Hill and the Summit Cone cannot be seen from this angle. The left side of the photo shows some of craggy Casaval Ridge. [Climb On]
