Shasta's West Face

The west face of Shasta offers an alternative route up to the base of Misery Hill. This route is more remote and consequently it is a less frequented variation among west side summit routes. It is best climbed when still covered in the consolidated snows of spring and early summer, but at any time of the year the west face offers a spectacular volcanic profile to stare at. This picture was taken from just over 9000 feet showing elevations that rise more than 5000 feet above. To the left is the northwest ridge with a snow ridge at the visible top of the mountain (the summit cannot be seen from here) marking the west face gully route. Casaval Ridge's jagged architecture runs down to the right, and the seemingly flat topped rock formation on a ridge in the distance to the right is Thumb Rock standing at 12,923 feet elevation near where the traditional route passes.
