A chance
meeting
with the Lane Community College Spring Term Mountaineering class lead
by Chris Culver as they practiced the fundamentals of safe mountaineering
above Pioneer Gulch. |
|
Standing
just below the summit
with the south cone and Summit Lake in the background, the storm clouds
danced around Diamond Peak's summit all day, sometimes revealing the
pinnacle, and then quickly shrouding it in mist. |
|
The
connecting ridge
which runs between the south and central summits revealed bare rock
on the western edge, while a high corniced snow wall capped the eastern
edge. This is typical due to the prevailing Pacific wind patterns. |
|
From
the summit looking north,
the clouds split open to reveal the lower northern summit of Diamond
Peak and its crested ridges of sentinel gendarmes. |
|
A telephoto
view of the northern summit
from where we sat in a cold wind eating our snacks. The air
temperature was 35 degrees with a steady icy wind blowing at 20 to
25 miles per hour. |
