..sUpErFiCiAlItY..

Superficiality is another thing I can't stand. I wrote an editorial for my school newspaper on the growing problem at our school: superificiality and shallownes..enjoy..if you can

"Oh my gosh, I'm so pale! I have to go tanning this weekend, or I dont know what I'll do!"

Sound familiar? We are sure that you have heard this phrase before, while roaming the halls (or boardwalk) at SPSG. That quote is one example that represents a growing problem at SPSG: superficiality and shallowness.

One only needs to spend a few hours in the school, and they will notice the growing "trends" - blonde hair (usually from the bottle, not natural), that atrocious orange-glow skin tone (thanks to tanning salons, bronzers, and self-tanners), those extremely bright Gap fleeces (which from large distances appear as highlighters), and many more.

Students these days worry too much about their appearance. However, this is not necessarily their fault. The media is a prime factor that influences many students to be overly concerned about their external features.

Ads featuring extremely thin models, perfect skin/hair, and beautiful makeup only allows for some girls to feel as if they have to meet the standards set by the ads.

If this is you, stop being so nave! Okay, so you want that look, but you're far from looking it. Don't become so absorbed by the media's shallow portrayal of girls today! Be happy with the unique qualities you were born with. So you're unhappy with your pale skin. Don't lay out in the sun to acquire that "just got back from the islands" look, you'll burn! Make the most of what you have, as cliches as it sounds.

It is truly understandable for girls today to become absorbed in their appearance. After all, when one feels that their appearance is up-to-par, it usually increases their self-assuredness and well being. However, if you continuously worry about your appearance to the point where you cannot focus on more important things in life (schoolwork, family/friends, health, etc), then you are crossing the line.

If you consider certain trends as "cool" and feel as though you must conform to society's "image" of that (even if you secretly despise the trend), do not take on that trend. Who needs to be trendy anyway? Create your own look, not one that society wants you to be. Give off your own air of confidence, not someone else's. We guarantee you'll feel much better about yourself and will worry less about superficial things like, "oh no! I'm 100 pounds! WHY did I eat that apple for lunch!? I'm gonna be SOOO fat!"
