Much speculation has been presented
as to whether or not Dubbya was aware that a terrorist strike was
imminent against the US. Original RadioRotarians may remember
RadioRote had introduced the subject of the Bush administration's
peculiar defensive posture, well before 9-11 took place. Most
of those RadioRote commentaries pre-dates this current site and was
presented in different segments and formats.
Therefore, for new Readers who
were not around during that 'discussion' and for those original
'subscribers' who caught it in segments, this multi-part exposé will
bring those ground breaking assessments into one article, with any updates
that followed.
John
Ashcroft’s FBI
That John Ashcroft was being
considered by Dubbya for the position of Attorney General within the
Department of Justice may not have appeared out of place for those who
knew little about this former Missouri Senator who recently lost to a dead
man in that State's gubernatorial election. Many believed that Mr.
Ashcroft carried the correct Conservative credentials that allowed him to
be Dubbya's standard bearer for the agencies he would over-look such as
the FBI, DEA, Prisons, Border Patrols and US Federal Attorneys.
What appeared to be overlooked
by most was that Mr. Ashcroft had a less-than-comfortable and sometimes
adversarial relationship with the FBI. One case that comes to mind
is that of a Right Wing Missouri Dentist named Dr. Sell. [i]
Dr. Sell and his wife were
charged with Medicaid fraud in Missouri based on the testimony of a
witness. Dr. Sell ordered a murder for hire against the FBI agent involved
in the case and the star witness. Ashcroft, who sat on the Senate
Judiciary Committee met with members of the CCC (a Right Wing Hate Group,
whose affiliation also included Sell and Senator Trent Lott of
Mississippi), to discuss the release of Sell and have the attempted FBI and
witness murder charges against Dr Sell dropped.
Here Ashcroft appeared to send a
message to the FBI that he supported the rights of a hard Right Wing FBI
stalker against those of the agent and the agency for which he worked.
Ashcroft, being the man the Senate approved as new head of the
Department of Justice. Needless to say, the anti-government CCC supported
Ashcroft’s US Attorney General nomination [ii].
During and shortly after his
nomination, there were stirrings on the subject of whether or not the 20
odd agencies that focus in on domestic terrorism should be under one
authority [iii].
Initially, RadioRote was under the impression that these 20 odd
domestic agencies would be placed under an umbrella group headed by
FEMA, with vice president Cheney as its titular head.
The question RadioRote raised was why the step of consolidating
these agencies was necessary... unless the White House wanted to
politicize and control their new one-stop ‘domestic terrorism’
agency. In doing so, the secrecy obsessed White House could impose
limitations upon any agency within this umbrella group (such
as the FBI) based on whatever was being investigating. This type of
tight-leash management control meant no more Iran-Contra type scandals
discovered, no more conchie talk of thrown elections spouted by
rabble-rousers meant to 'undermine' the government, very few
political connections scrutinized, no more special
prosecutors, period. After all, Bush already complained publicity there was
too much freedom in America and his role would be easier as dictator. All
that was needed, RadioRote concluded, was a threat d’ jour to give the
'Bush vision' some basis of reality.
It was obvious why a
pro-business line-up in the Bush administration was established. From Paul
O’Neil -- the Alcoa CEO cum Treasury Secretary -- to James
Connaughton, who defended polluters such as Alcoa and is now an appointee
to Dubbya's Council on Environmental Quality.
What is not obvious on the
surface is why
Dubbya would appoint a “hard on crime” Attorney General who
voluntarily met with the White Supremacist CCC on Dr. Sell’s behalf,
while Ashcroft was still a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee [iv].
That
Ashcroft would so vehemently attack the FBI once he became the head of the
DOJ -- up to and including the way Ashcroft appears to make the FBI as
well as INS the ‘fall guys’ in the mishandling of 9-11 now becomes
clearer. When the FBI and INS
are in danger of becoming disassembled and re-organized under the grand
design of the Bush
Administration, it would take less effort from the White House and
DOJ in forcing the other 20 odd domestic terrorist agencies to fall in
line under one White House umbrella group…a decision considered by the
Bush administration well before 9-11.
It was quite convenient for them that their “vision” of
consolidation gained
momentum after the attack on New York by a terrorist whose family had
multi-million dollar business dealings with Dubbya and other Bush family
members…well before and shortly after the 9-11 terrorist attack.
This may be one reason why members of the Bin-Ladin family, who
were believed by the FBI to have links to terrorist groups, were allowed
to flee the US and fly back
to Saudi Arabia shortly after 9-11 -- without giving the FBI ample
opportunity to interview them about possible links or leads.
These questions became the
starting point towards an assessment of 9-11, and what may be expected in
the future. RadioRote will review some of these and
other earlier issues, and re-examine them based on newer information
that has come to the forefront. This exposé
will again bring to light Jeb's timely Executive Order concerning
terrorists; whether or not the INS and FBI are to blame or were voices in
the wilderness; and whether or not the current bashing of the FBI is
well-deserved, or a political shell-game designed by the administration
and agency insiders towards
achieving an already pre-orchestrated law enforcement arrangement ...well
beyond what the pundits discuss.
Part 2: Did FBI/INS Warnings
Fall on
Deaf White House Ears?
[i] Conason, Joe Why Did
Ashcroft Try And Help Dr. Sell?
New York Observer 6/1/02
[iii] One of the earlier
discussions on the Bush Administration’s push for Ashcroft and Co.
to bind the agencies into one fold was noted on the Pacifica Nightly
News. (NOTE: PNN, after many years on the air, was suddenly replaced
without warning by screech-monkey’s who fooled themselves into
believing they were ‘guerrilla reporters’ For further analysis on
the Pacifica Radio Network, see:

[iv] In an odd twist of Justice
that ties into this story solely based on the defendant involved, the
Federal Court of Appeals in the 8th District voted 2-1 on
May 7th of 2000 -- that Dr. Sell can be drugged by the
government before he is presented to the court. The court ruled that
any drug or types of drugs could be administered to a defendant even
if the accused did not pose a threat to anyone.
Dr. Sell’s mental condition was deteriorating for years.
Apparently, the court wanted him to appear lucid while standing trial
(even if he may not have been so when the crime was committed),
in order to make the court look ‘humane’ while sentencing an
otherwise deranged individual.
The
point being that the court cleared the way for any psychiatrist to
order a defendant drugged before appearing in court, even if the drug
is a mind altering substance.

or http://www.aapsonline.org/press/nrsell.htm
Lastly, there is no evidence that Ashcroft
met with the CCC over the mental health issue of Dr. Sell.
Given the fact that Ashcroft once refused to appoint an able
Afro-American Jurist to the court on the trumped charge that the
appointee was not tough enough on crime because the appointee did not
previously send a defendant to execution;, and that Ashcroft praised
the Southern Partisan magazine in 1988 for softening the image of
slavery in the South; and that the CCC supports Ashcroft and his low
score card on civil rights in general, as well as his shared
philosophy with Dubbya on harsh punishment on criminals of any
kind….the evidence points towards the fact that Ashcroft’s Right
Wing ideology is one that hedges alongside the fringe elements in
America and has no problem, therefore, in placing an awl in the back
of an agency like the FBI who investigates such groups.
