What Are Otherkin?

What are Otherkin, you ask? Well, here is the definition of Otherkin as commonly defined by most websites, in my own words:

Otherkin: A spirit not human that is encased in a human body.

Basically, this means that Otherkin could be the English teacher, the Guidance Counsellor, your best friend, your parents, your aunt, your uncle, your religious leader - anybody! These are people who believe, either through intuition or dreams/visions that they are of some race other than Human, though they are in a Human body for the time being, be it for reasons varying from punishment to enlightenment to the cycle of Reincarnation.

How Do I know if I am Otherkin?

Unfortunately, this is only something that you can decide for yourself. However, such lists as Truewyrm, Real Dragon, Draconity, etc. exist to offer support to those who think that they are Otherkin. These lists can be found at http://www.yahoogroups.com .
Do you feel that you do not belong is some sort of group? Do you sometimes find yourself doing non-human traits or thinking non-human thoughts (i.e. the urge to fly, to sit in complete darkness, etc)? Is there an empty void in your soul that makes you feel incomplete? Do you find yourself wishing that you weren't here or thinking that you are something more? Even among crowds, do you often feel alone? No matter how much you eat or drink, do you find yourself with an unsatiable hunger? Well, then, there is a likely chance that you may, in fact, be Otherkin. This is not something you can force - all that you can do is open your heart and be ready to accept anything. If it feels right, if you think it's who you really are, then it probably is. You're the only person that is able to tell this. Nobody else. Hold on to your beliefs, no matter what anyone tells you. Sometimes they are all that you have to hold on to.

Are there any positives/negatives about being Otherkin?

Oh, you bet there are negatives. But, in time, the positives will outweigh the negatives. Some of the positives are that you will know who you are, you will know who you were, and you will never be left wondering "Who am I?" That void in your soul? It will be filled. Some of the dreams and visions you get can be truly glorious. If you look, you will find people just like you. People who are going through the same shit that you are. Take comfort in that you are NOT alone.

Some of the negatives are that you will never, ever feel like you "fit in". Because you won't. You are different. You are special - and that's a good special. Parents, and even people you thought as friends, will definitely ridicule your path of choice. Just as some of the dreams and visions are glorious, some of them are also more horrendous beyond your wildest nightmare.
