Help Me – No Destruction Please was an imagination of an old “struggling
to live” memorabilia store located somewhere at the crossroad in the
suburban town of Chicago. The Memorabilia store’s name is Highway
66 Old Stuffs. It sells wide range of old stuffs like books, postcards,
posters, street signs, newspapers and many more. Tens of buildings alongside
the road had been razed by the local government. The local Government intended
to built an ultra modern economic zone on the site. To people, the crossroad
was one of the most well known icon of highway 66. The situation, currently,
just like a haunting graveyard. No one is brave enough to pass through.
So bad.
That day, Al, as usual, ride his red painted Roadking to look for old things.
He loves to collect any old things. To him, old things are great. He doesn’t
know why. Just love them, that’s all. Yesterday his friend told him
that there is an old store near Joliet that sell various old things related
to Highway 66 memorabilia. Highway 66? What kind of highway is that? He
has collected oldies for 15 years, but he has never heard Highway 66 before.
It must be an exclusive one he thinks. Shortly, a day after, he prepares
his things (map, etc) and goes there. Alongside the road he sees there is
no life. That day, probably, only him and his Roadking who pass through
the line. It’s hard to find the store. There is no sign that guide
him to go there. He, then open his map. Unfortunately, he find nothing.
There is no route called Highway 66. Was the information fake? He has been
on his bike for more than 6 hours. He starts to feel upset. From the distance,
he sees an old man walking with his dog.
“Excuse me, could you show me the way to go to Highway 66 Old Stuffs?”
“I’ve tried to look at my map but there is no information
about it.” Al asking.
“Mmm son ... you are the only young man who ask me about this.”
The Old man, then, point at an old road pavement near them.
“It’s been a very long time ago son.”
“The route 66 has been permanently closed by the U.S. Government.”
“Just follow that old road pavement.”
“The pavement condition along the way is bad, but you still can
reach Highway 66 Old Stuffs.”
“Bye son.”
After showing Al the path, the old man walk away from him. The old man
then disappears.
Al, then, get back to his bike and ride on the old path. After quite some
times, “Oh my God!!!” He screams very loudly. He never believe
on what he see today. He has lived amid many old things for many years,
but he has never seen an old thing like what he sees today before. Very
Incredible!!! He sees a crossroad, a small one. There is only a building
that is located right on the left side of road beside an oak tree. It
seems that the building was built in 1930’s or something. There
is no other building except the building. He stop his bike and see the
rusty white billboard ... HIGHWAY 66 OLD STUFF ...
Thank God, I finally find it. There is also an old red chevy parked right
under the tree. It seems that it belongs to the building’s owner.
He looks around the site, ughh ... so messy. There is no other life except
the building. Al walks toward the front door to enter. He sees an old
ads presenting an old book titled “Route 66”. “It seems
the route was very outstanding, and it could be so important to people.”
He thinks. He then opens the door and enter the building. Woww!!! He looks
around, there are many old great things. Posters, books, signs and many
more.
“Hi”. “Good day”. A young woman greeted him.
“Hi” Al answered.
“Is all of this yours?” Al asked.
“Yes.” “These all used to be my grandpa’s”.
“Please have a good day Al.”
“Thanks.”
Al, then, walks toward a bookshelf fulfilled with various of
old books. He picked one titled “Route 66”, just like
title in the front door ads. He, then sat on beside a big window.
He start to open page one and read the book very seriously. Chicago,
Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.
He point at states that was crossed by the Route 66.
Once for a while he look outside and breath in so deeply, “Why
does people just abandon the highway that full of important history?
Without it, the people west coast can’t live so prosperous
just like today.” Once again, he breath in so deeply. Not
more than three hours he has finished reading the book. He look
outside, he look at his bike, he look at the street outside and
he doesn’t think twice to explore the Old Route 66.
A History. History of an old civilization has a very important
role to the existing civilization today. Without old civilization,
we, all people can’t live like today, surely. The old generation
has been built all things so tearful that can make we live like
today. Then, why does people just abandon the history and it’s
outcome that have made us, people, living so prosperous like today?
Highway 66. Today, it’s just a history. An old civilization.
Just a just old civilization if we deemed it so. It’s too
vicious if we just deemed it so. In it’s history, Highway
66 had a very important role in enhancing the economic development
of western part of the United States. Besides economic, it has
helped America built its culture that can be seen from things
built alongside the route. That’s real. Then, why do we
just abandon it? That’s all.
This artwork was built using various garbage things. I’ve
proven that creativity can turn any garbage into something cool
and useful.
