=R3DFIV3='s Quake DM 101

       While I'm not pretending to know everything about Quake deathmatch, I have been playing the game for close to 5 years now so I've come to learn a few tricks here and there. And if there's one thing that's remained a constant in all that time, it's that you never stop learning new stuff. There's always somebody out there who's gonna frag you in a way you never thought possible, even if that person is a newbie. That's why I invited some of my frag-buddies to give their input and tips about how to become a better deathmatcher. There might be a few technical tips but I won't go crazy with huge scripts and config stuff. I have received no tips so far so I'll start, and when I do get comments I will add them and give credit to their authors. Ok, intro over, on with the tips !!!

Basic DM tips and etiquette

- If it moves, by all means, SHOOT IT !!!
- If it doesn't move, make sure the person isn't chatting or lagging. If the person is not either, it's a camper. SHOOT IT !!!
- If possible, do not frag freshly spawned people. Accidents do happen though, and a simple "oops" or "sorry" should fix things.
- Please do not spam. No, I'm not talking about grenades or rockets, that's the nature of the Arena. I'm talking about shooting more words than rockets. ICQ and mIRC are designed for that. Quake is designed for fragging !!!
- A piece of advice from my clanmate W1CK3D{KEA}: If you get on a server and find yourself at the mercy of a much superior foe, don't turn tail and run. Take your beating like a man/woman. Becoming a better player is not about always winning, it's about learning from better players, therefore they must beat you before you beat them. Thanx W1ck :)

Technical stuff (well, roughly)

- Make sure you are comfortable. Relax all muscles. Breathe deeply. 3.2.1. FIGHT !!!

- DeathAngel{KEA} (aka Lumpy, Cherry and Mistress) has this advice for people using 56k connections. Learn to lead your targets. Shoot slightly in advance of where they'll be 250-300 milliseconds later. It's a bit like in flight sims, but it's also very true for the instant hit weapons like the Railgun. Eventually you learn how much lead you need to nail your shots. Thanx Lumpy !!! :)

- Another clanny, Polack{KEA}, has these tips for beginning Instagib players:
   -Keep your crosshair level at all times. Trick shots will come in time.
   -Shoot as much as possible. The reload speed is faster on some servers so USE IT!
   -Take out the best (leading) players first. Deal with the lesser players after that.
   -Use the grappling hook only to escape the better players. Hook-monkeying will come in time!
   -And Don't frag Chatters !!! :) Thanx a lot Polack.

- Here's one from me: Learn to Rocket-jump! It goes like this (control, you must learn control!):
   -Move forward (sideways is possible but hard) with Rocket Launcher (RL) in hand.
   -In a quick motion and in that order, point the RL down towards the floor, jump and then fire!
   -If you've done this right, you should be reaching big heights. If not, stack up on health and armor and do it again !!!
   -There are binds you can use to acheive this, but if you want special jumps you have to do it manually.

Commands and binds (of the fun kind)

- When you play with -=MoR=-Harro, you see him spin all over the place. Here's how he does it. Thanx Harro :)

//Harro's Spin
bind , "set cl_yawspeed 2000; +left; +movedown"
bind . "set cl_yawspeed 140; -left; -movedown"

- Here's a bind I use to record demos (replays) of games for future viewing (bragging) and Geekplay screenshots:

//Demo recording script
bind "r" "vstr demo_button"
set demo_button_1 "set demo_button vstr demo_button_0;set g_synchronousclients 1;wait;record;wait;set g_synchronousclients 0"
set demo_button_0 "set demo_button vstr demo_button_1;wait;stoprecord"
set demo_button "vstr demo_button_1"

   Pressing "r" starts and stops the recording of the game. It works online too so if you're on a roll, record it !!!
