Hollinger Captures Duals Title
| At
the provincial finals at Table Mountain, dual
slalom competition returned to the Sask Cup circuit after several years
absence, and all competitors seemed to enjoy it very much, so hopefully
it is back for a long time to come. All QVSC athletes skied very
well and many went a long way into the draw. Rachelle Hollinger proved to be unbeatable among all women in the dual competition held at Table Mountain. Rachelle defeated all her competition in the J1 Women's category, then went on to beat the rest of the women's class winners to claim the OVERALL Women's Dual Championship. On the men's side, Brady Achtymichuk was the top K1 male but lost out in the overall semifinals to eventual champion, Derek Donald of the Regina Ski Club. In J4 competition, Yolandi Lombard was victorious on the women's side. |

QVSC Athletes Compete
At Canadians
Two Qu'Appelle Valley Ski
Club athletes were among the four racers representing Saskatchewan at the
Canadian Juvenile Championships held at Nakiska Ski Area in Alberta. Joel
Taylor and Brittany Simmons were selected from the Sask Juvenile Team
by Sask's Head Coach, John Crichton, to compete at these races along with two
other members from the Sask Juvenile Team.
Competition included all four disciplines, Downhill (DH), Super Giant Slalom (SG),
Giant Slalom (GS) and Slalom (SL), with the best juvenile aged (13-14 years
old) athletes from all across Canada.
Both Brittany and Joel posted their best results in the SL race, with Brittany
placing 6th and Joel coming in 19th. In GS competition Brittany skied to
a 17th place result while Joel placed 26th. Race day for DH was a bit
disappointing for both athletes as they placed in the 40's after having great
training runs; Brittany had a top 10 time in training and Joel attained one of
the faster speeds through the speed trap. SG proved to be tough with
Joel placing 43rd while Brittany did not finish.
Overall these two athletes represented our club and Saskatchewan very
well. It must be noted that Joel is a first year K2 athlete and will
have the opportunity to compete again at this event next year. Well done
Joel and Brittany!

Athletes Honoured At
QVSC Banquet
Qu'Appelle Valley Ski Club
held it's annual banquet at the Legion Hall in Fort Qu'Appelle to honour it's
athletes for the past season. Once again there was a tremendous meal
offered as everyone brought a fantastic dish to this pot luck supper.
While early comers were mingling or watching videos from the past season,
coaches were busy preparing pins and passport books for those athletes in the
Skill Awards program. Once supper was over, Calvin Reed emceed the
evening, first calling on club president, Gary Delaney, to make a few remarks
about the club.
The three Alpine Race Team members who are graduating from high school this
year were then called upon to make a presentation to Head Coach, Kirk
Cochrane. Ryan Ottenbreit, Pamela Hollinger
and Sara Solvey presented Kirk with a plaque in
appreciation for leading them to six consecutive provincial championships.
Kirk Cochrane then introduced the coaches of the Nancy Greene Ski League
program and these coaches then presented athletes from their groups with their
passport books and pins earned for the year. Kirk commended the athletes
and coaches for making great improvements despite a season shortened by
unseasonably warm temperatures.
The Alpine Race Team was then introduced with Kirk mentioning something
special about each athlete, along with their Sask Cup points earned to help
lead the club to the provincial championship. It is worth noting that
each and every member gained some points to make this a truly TEAM
effort! Finally, the Development Team was presented with mention of how
important they are to the program, as they also helped the TEAM by gaining
points towards the club championship.
Last on the agenda was the presentation of the annual awards to the Alpine
Race Team. The awards for Most Sask Cup points in each category were
presented first as follows:
J1/J2 Women - Amber Simmons
J1/J2 Men - Adam Fenwick
K2 Women - Brittany Simmons
K2 Men - Joel Taylor
K1 Women - Kara Delaney
K1 Men - Kenton Hamilton
Kirk mentioned that the coaches had a tough time deciding on the winners
for the following awards before they were presented to:
Kristen Solvey - Rookie Girl
Brady Achtymichuk - Rookie Boy
Allysen Reed - Most Improved Girl **Honourable
mention to Rhiannon Jones**
Chris Reid - Most Improved Boy
Rachelle Hollinger - Sportsmanship
Finally, the plaque for the Most Sask Cup Points by a club was presented to
our three graduating athletes (Sara, Pamela and Ryan)
to display for a picture opportunity with the whole team.
