QVSC Athletes Join Juvenile Team
Several athletes from our club have joined the Alpine Saskatchewan Juvenile Team. Joel Taylor, Brittany Simmons and Danielle Kortmeyer, members of last year's juvenile team, were joined by Allysen Reed and Kara Delaney at Blackcomb for a summer ski camp.

Annual Bike-a-thon Again a Success
Once again athletes turned out in impressive numbers to make this day a success.

October thru November
Getting in Shape
Every Sunday afternoon many members came to the high school in Fort Qu'Appelle for two hours of intensive workouts to get ready for the upcoming ski season.  After stretching, athletes were put through the paces working all muscle groups with various exercises.  Each session ended with a different game, that at times became quite competitive.

Athletes Off To The Mountains

Sixteen athletes (three from the Ochapowace Club), three coaches and one chaperone loaded into two vans and headed west in search of snow for our annual mountain mileage camp.  Once again, we stayed at the Ribbon Creek Hostel in Kananaskis.  This season we skied at four different ski areas due to marginal snow conditions in the Rockies.  Each morning started with a warm-up jog and some stretching.  Groups took turns preparing lunch, cleaning up after meals or making supper.  Evenings were spent with the athletes (**Parents take note**) working on their school work, going for a swim at Kananaskis and one evening heading into Banff.
Monday we headed for Fortress Mountain and were greeted with 33 cm of fresh powder.  It was a fantastic way to start the season as all that powder forced the athletes to get a lot of movement in their skiing.  The athletes were split into three different groups to ski with coaches Gary Delaney, John McNally and Kirk Cochrane.  Despite a long traverse across the mountain, breaking trail the whole way, by a couple of griping groups, everyone had a great day!
Sunshine Village was our destination for Tuesday.  Sunshine had all the winter ski conditions one could look for, so everyone pushed themselves in bumps, through crud, over cliffs and had some great cruising - all in all, a wonderful day of skiing and getting lots of mileage.  We had a short visit with the Provincial Juvenile Team, who were training at Sunshine, so we were able to say "HI" to the QVSC members (Kara Delaney, Brittany Simmons, Allysen Reed and Joel Taylor) on the team.
We took the short trip to Nakiska Ski Area for their opening day on Wednesday and found that, although there weren't many runs open, there was some great cruising to be had.  We were joined today by two more QVSC athletes.  The day was spent working on long, wide open, GS type turns.  Athletes were video taped for the coaches to analyze their skiing one evening.  At the end of the day we were treated to a fantastic supper supplied and prepared by Deb Hollinger.  Once again it was fantastic!
For our final day of skiing we had planned on skiing Nakiska, however, due to the poor way we were treated the previous day we opted to make the drive to Lake Louise.  Although this was a rather expensive venture it proved to be very worthwhile as the ski conditions were great and everyone had a fantastic day - even a couple of coaches after they realized they came through some spills relatively unscathed!  (although I believe John was hurting for quite awhile after!) :) :)

QVSC Nancy Greene Ski League Starts
Although only the bunny hill and one run were available, the athletes in the Nancy Greene Ski League and QVSC Snowboard Program were able to kick off their ski season.  The skiers were introduced to their coaches for the season and all were very enthusiastic to hit the slopes.  Thanks must be extended to all the parents and race team athletes who helped get the new skiers going.  Also, thank you to the Mission Ridge Ski Area staff for having these runs ready despite very difficult snow making weather.
