QVSC Alpine Race Team Five-peats
For the fifth consecutive year the coaches of the Qu'Appelle Valley Ski Club's Alpine Race Team have been presented the plaque awarded to the Saskatchewan race team that accumulates the most Sask Cup points throughout the race season. Doug Wilson, Alpine Saskatchewan's Competition Chairman, presented the award to Kirk and Cory Cochrane at the annual Saskatchewan Alpine Ski Association Awards Banquet held in the community hall in Broadview. Kirk called all the members of the QVSC Development and Alpine Race Teams onstage to share the moment. QVSC amassed 2930 points, more than the next three clubs combined, to record what may be the largest margin of victory ever!
Individual awards were also presented at the banquet and our athletes came away with the bulk of the hardware. Our J1 Women, J2 Women and J3 Men swept their respective categories. An athletes Sask Cup points are calculated by totaling their seven best results of the ten series races held to this point. Of these seven results, two must be from Giant Slalom races. QVSC winners were:
J1 WOMEN
First - Amber Simmons
Second - Ashley Hall
Third - Pamela Hollinger
J2 WOMEN
First - Brittany Simmons
Second - Rachelle Hollinger
Third - Sarah Boake
J3 WOMEN
Second - Danielle Kortmeyer
J3 MEN
First - Joel Taylor
Second - Aaron Fenwick
Third - Kenton Hamilton
The banquet, hosted by the Ochapowace Ski Club, was also the venue for the announcement of athletes chosen to represent Saskatchewan at the Western Canadian Juvenile Championships. QVSC members, Brittany Simmons, Sarah Boake, Rachelle Hollinger, Danielle Kortmeyer & Joel Taylor were among the ten racers named who will be travelling to Marmot Basin at Jasper, Alberta with provincial juvenile coach Leann Zahn and chaperone Wayne Kortmeyer. Also, Chelsea Hamilton was named as an alternate to the team.

Fantastic Turnout for QVSC Fun Day
QVSC members from the NGSL, Development and Alpine Race Teams turned out in great numbers to participate in our club's on-snow windup. Parents and coaches pitched in to help hold several FUN events for teams that were made up with skiers from Level 1 Nancy Greene right up through the Alpine Race Team. Coaches acted as captains for each team as they strived to beat all the other teams in the following events: obstacle course slalom, clothing relay race, ski search relay, and a synchro skiing competition. A treasure hunt was also held throughout the day. The festivities concluded with everyone receiving a free hot dog and drink, a goodie bag and a prize for participating.

Hollinger Proves Flatlanders Can Go Fast
Our own Rachelle Hollinger sped her way down the mountain at Marmot Basin, Jasper to place fourth in the Super Giant Slalom (SG) competition at the Western Canadian Juvenile Ski Championships. Rachelle narrowly missed being able to stand upon the podium as her time was only 1/10th of a second behind the third place finisher. This is an awesome result for Saskatchewan in a speed event as we don't get much chance (if any) to train for them - in fact, Rachelle had never trained for SG before!

Simmons Does Saskatchewan Proud
Gold was the colour of the day for Brittany Simmons at the Western Canadian Juvenile Ski Championships in Jasper, Alberta. Brittany topped all other girls in the Giant Slalom (GS) competition at Marmot Basin, much to the surprise of the "mountain girls" who feel that a "prairie girl" wouldn't know how to go fast on a mountain. Brittany is a first year J2, so she is eligible to compete in a juvenile championship again next year. Her goal is to compete at the Canadian Juvenile Championships!
Rachelle Hollinger skied to a seventh place finish in the GS to go along with her great result in SuperG, two very impressive results.

Qu'Appelle Valley Ski Club Honours It's Own
QVSC held it's annual awards banquet at the Legion Hall to honour all the athletes for their achievments this past season. The evening started with a fantastic pot luck supper and was followed by comments from Gary Delaney, our Alpine Chairman. Kirk Cochrane then introduced all the coaches involved with all our teams.
The Nancy Greene Ski League coaches presented their students with their passport books and Skill Award pins, as Kirk called them up. The NGSL athletes all did a great job this season, everyone improved at least one level in the Skill Awards program, a testament to their hard work and that of the coaches.
Next the Alpine Race Team was presented and the members of the Development Team came up to join them for photo opportunities with the Alpine Saskatchewan Annual Most Sask Cup Points Plaque.
Finally, the Alpine Race Team presented it's own annual awards as selected by the Alpine Race Team coaches. Winning the awards for 1999 were:
