In 00/01 the Principal and teachers ran a Spellathon and raised over $7,000.00
In 02/03 the Principal
and teachers ran another Spellathon and raised over $6,000.00 as of
February 2003
In 04/05 the Principal and teachers organized the sale of Entertainment
Books in September.
In April 2001 the Student Council ran a fundraiser called 'Pennies From The Heart' to help Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR) build a water well in Uganda. The event raised over $500. CPAR are like Doctors Without Borders, except Doctors Without Borders tend to go and help after a crisis, while CPAR tend to try and do things like the water wells for healthier water to avoid a health crisis.
The thinking behind the choice of CPAR was the PAC runs the Xmas Single Parent Food Bank Appeal, a local charity - so the Student Council could support a global charity. Also, thinking globally was a good fit with the introduction of the Internet on classroom computers.
In
May 2002 and February 2003, grade two students ran a bake sale to support
Canuck Place for terminally ill children.
In April 2006 the
Student Council ran a fundraiser called 'Twoonies From The Heart' to help
Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR)
build a water well in Uganda. The event raised over $1,600.
The Canadian School Board Association has gathered fundraising ideas from across the country. A is for ASK: A Fundraising Guide is available for $25. Learn what to do and what not to do! Contact CSBA
Background information on PAC finances:
Around 94/5 parents complained that each year the PAC begins Sep. not knowing how much the annual fundraising effort (includes usually one major event ie. a direct appeal or giftwrap sale) will bring in, therefore they are hindered in their planning of expenditures for the year. So that year the PAC held two major fundraising events with the intention of spending the profit from one event and holding the profit from the other so that in future each Sep. the PAC could spend through the year the previous year's profit and hold one major fundraising event so funds would be available for each new PAC in Sep. The plan did not succeed as the very next Sep. the PAC spent the previous year's funds plus the funds from the major fundraising event of their year.
As mentioned above there is usually one major fundraiser a year (other than a casino license application). Some years parents have voted for a fundraiser like giftwrap sale or spellathon so that students will learn to work towards a financial goal. Some years parents have voted for a direct appeal, so minimal volunteer time is required from parents to organize the fundraising event. When a giftwrap sale or spellathon is run students are advised not to go door to door for sales/pledges, just to try friends and neighbours they know. Also, students are advised not to compare results with other students and to work for their personal best.
For several years the PAC has applied annually for a casino license for fundraising. Originally the funds were for computers. Funds were also used for a gym sound system. Recently the the funds have been for the playground improvements and teaching garden (part of school beautification). A condition for granting a casino license is that the casino not be the sole source of funds for the charitable organization.
The annual Teachers'
Discretionary Funds traditionally given by the PAC are so that teachers
are free to get some small things for their classrooms, without having
to go the usual route of submitting a request to a school board or PAC
committee that must then decide which requests have priority.
