I was never good at school and my youngest memories of school, were the long hours my mother would patiently sit by my side, trying to help me to comprehend the lessons for the day. I was always afraid of my teachers and more afraid of exams. A "star" student I wasn't! I ended up leaving school in the eleventh grade and opting for marriage instead. I was to spend many years working at laborous jobs with little paid. My grandfather understanding my hardships, taught me that my life wasn't hopeless, it would take a belief system within myself. A "Monkey-see-Monkey-do" attitude. I was able to "sell" myself into jobs as secretaries, then insurance sells, and later into counselor for Jenny Craig. Only after a dear friend, Betty Mills encouraged me to get my G.E.D. in 1988. This was the first of my Scholastic Achievements: Test 1: Correctness and Effectiveness of Expression........55 69% Test 2: Reading Materials in the Social Studies............54 65% Test 3: Reading Materials in the Natural Sciences..........62 89% Test 4: Literary Materials.................................63 90% Test 5: General Mathematical Ability.......................49 46% (OH! Well! So I'm lousy in Math) Average Standard Score.........................................56 Thus my first Schlastic Achievements was beating the average standard score of 45. My second Scholastic Achievements came in 2000. I had just returned to the states, after spending three years in Costa Rica. I had moved to Ogallala, Nebraska to help a friend, who (if truth be known) had brought me here to have time to acclimate to being back in the states. I went to work at a local retail clothing store, Stage, only to find out a year later that it was closing its' doors and relocating. That left nine employees without jobs and little to look forward to in re-employment. So, at the young age of 50, I found myself outside the workforce without security, benefits, and on unemployment wages that hardly paid the bills. I was fortunate to have been blessed with a wonderful opportunity to return to school for a degree. Through Workforce of Nebaska, I would have the funds to allow me to finance this degree. But first I had to pass the college ASSET test. I had been out of school for over 32 years! Mid-Plains Community College ASSET Student Advising Report: Writing Skills....47 (EXCELLENT! So, I enrolled in Mid-Plains Community College in January 2000, Spring Semester. Knowing this was going to be hard, but knowing this was a gift from God, I was determined to give it all I had. I chose the field of Computer Science for I knew technology would to be the way of the future. Not having ever owned a computer, this was both terrifying and exciting for me.
