| GENERAL My piano qualifications include: LTCL (Licentiate of Trinity College London) FTCL (Fellow of Trinity College London) Bachelor of Music (University of Arizona, USA) I've been teaching piano here in Penang since my graduation from the University of Arizona way back in May 1984. As far as piano teaching in Malaysia is concerned, here are a few things-facts, trivia and some useless information :-) I've learnt and experienced: (1) Some people think piano teaching is an easy job-not so! For starters, you've got to get students coming to you, the salary is unpredictable, some students are hardworking while others can't be bothered, etc. You get the picture. (2) You need nerves of steel when dealing with students. You need to be a shrink (sorry, psychologist), mentor, disciplinarian, advisor and general entertainer in order to teach piano here. (3) Above all, lots of patience is needed! THE BIG QUESTION: WHY LEARN FROM ME? * My music qualifications (see above). * I have over 20 year's experience teaching piano. * I conduct lessons on a one-to-one basis, even for beginners. * Music software is incorporated into my lessons. For example, Music Ace for beginners and Sibelius 3 for my theory students. * Most important of all: I am a very honest and direct teacher. I don't beat around the bush when it comes to teaching, meaning that I praise the student when he or she merits it. On the other hand, admonishments have to be given when I sense the student is not doing his/her work. MY TEACHING STUDIO I've been using a Yamaha Clavinova CVP-105 digital piano for the past eight years or so, and I must say that I am VERY impressed with this technological marvel. About a year ago, I traded in my aging Roland E-66 keyboard for a brand new Korg pa50 keyboard and am very impressed with the sounds and features. You can read my review here. |
