He enlisted on May 10, 1861. Fought for two years and was wounded on June (July) 11, 1863, in battle near Jackson, Mississippi. Records show he received "Scalp wound - slight" Evidently he recovered and was wounded again that same year. He was a Sergeant by the time he was wounded in Jackson.
He re-enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant on Oct. 10, 1964.
He was discharged then re-enlisted in March of 1865 and commissioned a Captain in Co. K, 11th Mich. Inf..
He served as Captain until the close of the Civil War. He received three wounds, once to his head, and fought in many battles, among them Knoxville and Fair Oaks.
He was mustered out of Nashville, Tennessee on September 16, 1865. He married Martha Wood 22 Feb 1865. She was born 24 Jun 1843.
At the end of the war he went on to serve as a Representative in the State Legislature and was elected to the Senate in 1877.
He later homesteaded in Dakota Territory in 1882-1888 when he returned to Michigan.
He died July 29, 1890 at the Pontiac Asylum in Pontiac, Michigan. He evidently had shell shock, which in those days they didn't know how to treat, so he went to the asylum. His condition was ascribed to: "wounds to the head received in the line of duty, while patient was in the service of the U.S. Government during the war of the rebellion".
