Ziegler, John C.

Co. "H"

John C. Zeigler appears in the Roster for the 14th Mich. Inf. and not the 2nd. Now that I have his bio up I will leave it on here. I find it interesting that his Memorial would indicate the 2nd Mich. Inf.

John C. Ziegler was born in Wurtemberg Germany on the 15th of November 1830. At the age of fourteen he was apprenticed to a jeweler, and followed that trade in Germany until 1852, when he came to America and located at Detroit.

In 1859 he came to Saginaw and entered the employ of Thomas Doughty, where he remained until 1861, when he enlisted in Company H, Second Michigan Infantry. (Actual was probably the 14th Inf.). He was 30 years when he enlisted and indicated Saginaw Co. as his home.

In 1861 he married Christina Hink. They had seven children, three sons, Louis Ziegler of Chicago, Charles and Albert, of Saginaw; and four daughters, Mrs. Emma Roth of Blumfield, and Misses Augusta, Clara, and Helen, of Saginaw.

He served during the war and then returned to Saginaw and established in the jewelry business on the west side, where he was for years the leading jeweler.

Some business reverses, and poor health compelled him soon after to seek a more healthful business, and though he has done something at his trade most of the time since then, he has been quite extensively engaged in growing grapes, which he made into wine.

He was an honored member of J. M. Penoyer post No. 90, G. A . R. , and of the Teutonia society.

John C. Zeigler passed away on the 30th of March 1893 and was laid to rest in the Brady Hill Cemetery in Saginaw Mich.

"He has always been esteemed as a good citizen and upright man."
