Morey Family

"Family Bios"

I am also copying Pvt. Church of the 2nd Michigan Infantry - reenactors on this message.This part is for Pvt. Church for background on the family.

Albert M. Morey 7th Mich. Inf E
Edward O. Morey 2nd Mich. Inf H
George Morey 10th Mich. Inf E
Henry J.O. Morey 2nd Mich. Inf H
Sylvanus J. Morey 10th Mich. Inf ?

Of the six sons of Wanton L. Morey (Lester Morey), all born in New York and at least five of them moving with the family to Michigan. First to Nankin township, Wayne County, Michigan around 1853-1854. Henry stayed with his uncle George Morey/Morea when the rest of the family moved to Otisville, Forest Township, Genesee County, Michigan in 1855.

Albert M. Morey was a member of the Lapeer Guard, in Lapeer County. He and members of the unit enlisted in E Co. 7th Michigan Infantry on 19 August 1861, age 21.

The regiment was based at Monroe Michigan for training. Albert re-enlisted at Stevensburg in 1863. For enlisting he received a 30 day leave. He stayed 32 days and was reported as deserting (note there was no AWOL - absent without leave as we currently have).

In 1865 around the area south of Petersburg he was captured (I think the area was called Deep Bottom). He was reported as "Deserting to the Enemy" by one of the sergeants of the regiment. He was taken prisoner and after a brief period in captive was able to escape. He then reported to a hospital in Washington where he was mustered out.

However he lost his papers that were issued to him, and the regiment was never informed of his return. Then when he applied for a pension from the government it was turned down.

Albert was living in Otisville, Forest Township, Genesee County, Michigan at time of enlistment.

George Morey (of forest) enlisted on 25 March 1864 in E Co. 10th Inf. Reg. of Michigan, age 22.

I assume this George is Henry's brother and would be living in Forest Township, Genesee County, Michigan.

George died of disease at Detroit, Michigan on 27 May 1864 and was buried at Detroit.

** { Henry J.O. Morey was the son of Wanton L. Morey and was born in Sodus New York in 1835. }

In 1859 Henry J.O. Morey married Rositte Townsend and had two children (1860, 1863).

Henry J.O. Morey enlisted {in Detroit} on 21 March 1864 in H Co. 2nd Inf. Reg. of Michigan, age 27.

Henry was living in Nankin Township, Wayne County, Michigan.

Henry and Edward joined Co. H of the 2nd Michigan during or right after the fight at Cold Harbor. They then marched to Petersburg.

** { He died in Ypsilanti, Michigan in 1923 and is buried in Highland Cemetery in Ypsilanti. }

** { There are military and pension records at NARA. }

Edward O. Morey enlisted 29 March 1864 in H Co. 2nd Inf. Reg. of Michigan age 18.

Edward was living in Otisville, Forest Township, Genesee County, Michigan.

Edward came down with some disease and went on Sick Call. Henry and Albert were able to visit Edward in the field hospital. Edward was mustered out at Delaney House, Washington D.C. on July 28, 1865.

** { Morey, Edward O., Buried in unknown name Cemetery in Lapeer Co., Michigan. }

Sylvanus J. Morey enlisted in March 1864 in the 10th Inf. Reg of Michigan age 19.

Sylvanus was living in Otisville, Forest Township, Genesee County, Michigan.

Sylvanus went to Detroit for his physical and was released as being unfit for duty. I have been told that one reason men were released from duty was that they did not have two off-setting teeth so that they could bite the bullet cartage before loading their weapon.

Henry's brother-in-law Aldrich Townsend served with the 24th Michigan Infantry. He survived the war.

Henry Townsend, who might have been a brother-in-law, enlisted in Company C of the 1st U.S. Sharpshooters and was killed in battle in 1863.

Another soldier Albert Ganong from Nankin Township, enlisted in Company K of the 24th Michigan Infantry on August 8, 1862 and was captured in battle in late 1862 and died as a prisoner at Libby Prison, Richmond, VA on January 11, 1863.

Albert was the cousin of Harriet Elizabeth Ganong, who was Henry's second wife.

There is still a missing brother that I have not been able to find. I also don't know why the four brothers would decide to enlist in March of 1864. It might have been as a result of the time Albert Morey spend home on leave or it could have been that the missing brother who should have been the oldest son, might have been in the service and had been captured or killed. I am still doing research in this area.

All the brothers held the rank of Private at the end of their service.
