Character avatars like these were once popular on Guestworld's advanced guestbooks, which were used as message boards at the time. Then one day Lycos got their hands on poor old Guestworld, renamed it to GuestGEAR, and completely eliminated the advanced customized guestbook feature. This effectively killed a great deal of good forums, the likes of which will probably never be seen again.
