| Scene Two: SOLDIER: I found that hussy Mr. President, shes in our custody. She wasnt quite like I expected though. She didnt resist arrest; she was perfectly calm and friendly. Very friendly (he blushes, and then continues straight faced). I felt bad and told her I was under your orders, so now here she is. The rest of the women, however, were able to get away, we dont know how, one minute they were here and the next they were off so fast we couldnt chase them down. Theyre up in the mountains now, dancing and praising. Im just glad Im not in your shoes. W.: Go ahead and take off her handcuffs and youre dismissed. She wont leave now. (Soldier does so and exits) (W. looks her over.) Well, well, youre actually quite good-looking. But Im married of course, so thats completely unimportant, I mean, I barely noticed (frustrated with trying to dig himself out, he huffs and continues). Look at that confidence, almost haughtiness; youre used to persuading many people arent you? I can see it. Thats why youre here though isnt it? Tell me your purpose in this campaign. VIRGINIA: Of course, sir, its really quite simple. Ive come for my piece of the American dream. Im here to make a little money. W.: Yes, but how do you plan to do that? VIRGINIA: I sell cigarettes, and we have a new type, as you know, they make you feel freer than any other legal product could. W.: How, exactly, do they make you feel? VIRGINIA: Its indescribable, but its an invaluable experience. W.: What a neat quibble. Now I really want to know. VIRGINIA: If you keep trying to be clever this could get ugly. W.: I dont know what you could mean by that. VIRGINIA: Speak wisdom to a fool and hell think you have no sense at all. W.: So who do you expect will actually buy your cigarettes? VIRGINIA: Anyone with half a mind. So perhaps youll never have any. W.: Youll be punished for thisthis wicked cleverness. VIRGINIA: And you for your stupidity, for irreverence to the corporations that have supported you. W.: Tough talk for a lone woman. Well get you a nicotine patch, and then well see whos obstinate. VIRGINIA: It wont satisfy, it never could measure up. Just like some men who make it into government. W.: Cuff her! She has insulted meand the nation. She is in my power. VIRGINIA: Trust me, this is only temporary, and before long we will have all the power, and you will be nothing but a puppet. W.: Get her out of here! (Chorus women start to hum melodically) These women! Get them out of my sight! VIRGINIA: We will not forget this grievous insult. The industry will turn on you and bind you in ways you can not imagine. CHORUS: Oh, our high born leader is being taken away. The rage of her followers and her colleagues will be greater than this young fool can imagine. Do you see this RJR? Do you see this? Oh, the treatment of one who should be revered for her innovation! Help us sweet Virginia to stand proud and coherent before this great threat. |
