Very Very Basic Purse Tutorial
So first you start out with a rectangle of fabric.  Any size.  the rectangle should be twice as long as you want the purse to be tall, and about 5-6 inches wider than you want the purse to be wide.
Then you fold it in half, and stitch up the sides.  these are the side seams.  the fold is the bottom of the purse, and the open end is the top.  you should have a flat bag.
This is the tricky part to explain.  You want to fold your flat bag so that the side seam is the end of the point, and it looks like the pic at the left.  you're basically flattening it out so you can sew across the triangle at the bottom and make the flat bag into a box shape.
If any of the previous step made sense, you now sew straight across the bottom corner, about 2 or 3 inches from the point.  you stitch perpendicular to the side seam.  do this on both bottom corners.
You should now have a box that sort of stands upon its own--wrong side out it will look like the pic at left.
Turn it right side out, fold over the top inch and stitch down.
cut two straps of whatever length you want.  you can use pre made straps, or cut two rectangles twice as wide as you want the strap and as long as you want it, fold the rectangle and half, stitch the edge, and turn right side out.
Stitch the ends of the straps to the sides of your bag, and you're done.  If you want the bag lined, make a lining bag the same way you did your outer bag, sit it inside the outer bag, and then fold the outer edge over to cover the lining edge, and then stitch.
