Detroit Drive

(MADISON, WI) The Drive call the Motor City home, but the first thing the team did upon reporting to camp was take a bus to Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin. Thats where owner Bob keeps the Drives home office and practice facility but the man in charge has been conspicuously absent from camp so far. Bob is getting married the week before the draft and has been spending most of his time picking out unity candles and making plans for a honeymoon in Bermuda.

That hasnt stopped new head coach Gary Moeller from preparing to make a playoff run in just the Drives second season.

I really think we can make some noise in the league this year, Moeller told reporters. I think the Drive is the team to watch in the PWFFL.
When asked if there were any specific instructions Mr. Pinter had left with him, Moeller responded, "Yeah, he told me to also find time to cut out heart-shaped silver and royal blue wedding invitations to send out to 400+ people. What's messed up is that I didn't see anyone from this organization on the list." He continued, "We are out here sweating our butts off, and he's running around the country sipping wine and waxing his candles. What kind of place are we running here? When I was with the Lions, they at least let us practice in some air conditioning, I don't think there's a fan in this whole joint."

Dispite Moeller's dissatisfaction, the Drive are certainly attracting quite a bit of media attention. Nationally syndicated talk show host Jim Rome picked Detroit as his site for Tour Stop #31, where Bob was a featured guest. Even if the Drive dont make the playoffs in 2003, they are among the more exciting teams to keep an eye on.

The new team leader was decided prior to the end of last season, when QB Michael Vick established himself as the cornerstone of the franchise for the long term. Much of his supporting cast, however, is still unproven. Runningbacks Travis Henry, Amos Zereoue, and William Green are all very young, and wide receivers Lavernaues Coles and Rod Gardner can best be described as raw.

With that in mind, the Drive spent time in the offseason looking for a veteranand after talks with David Boston and the Kalamazoo Vikings fizzled, Bob turned to Wisconsin and the Wannabes for a receiver. Rod Smith is expected to provide leadership to a team that may still be finding its sense of direction. Theres no question about where Bob is headed, though. Its just a matter of determining whether his team finds the same kind of bliss in the 2003 season.
