Exile
Exiled from his home what exactly happened  to Remy during those years of wandering until he joined the X-Men are unknown. What is know that he travelled all over the world, he went to England and got involved with Policewoman Alexandra Davies, then moved onto Europe (after getting himself an Interpol record), to Paris where he meant Candra. However, neither knew the connection to the other (too busy with other things) Remy apparently stole things for Candra until he decided to leave, apparently due to her cruelty.

Remy also went to Madripoor, and did work in South America with Spat and Grovel ( the result of which was Spat been hit by a beam that began reducing her to a baby). Eventually, Remy returned to the US, and started from Key West he head across the States to Arizonia were he apparently ended up in the small town of Millstone, where for probably four or six months he worked with waitress Claire De Luc and a strange native American, Grey Crow. Remy had been losing control of his powers for a while now, but it soon had reached dangerous levels.

Grey Crow, unknown to Remy was actually Scalphunter who was part of a evil mutant group, and he directed Remy to a doctor he knew. Dr. Essex (I believe that Remy didn't know who he was really going to), in Seattle.

Remy eventually left Millstone, apparently after Grey Crow left, and ended up in Seattle. It's uncertain how he got to Essex, but I believe that he went to the Essex Theatre and his powers raged out of control nearly destroying it. It was then Essex found him, in this conditition Remy would have no choice but to allow himself to be operated on. This made his powers controllable, but a horrible cost, Essex 'blackmailed' Remy into using his theiving skills for his purposes.

Remy succeeded in paying off his debt, but Essex had more up his seelve, somehow convincing Remy that he needed the parts he had taken from his brain so badly that Remy agreed to assemble a number of dangerous mutants. Arclight, Scrambler, Blockbuster, Prism and Sabretooth!

Remy planned to leave Essex, who he now realised (or discovered) was Sinister, but Sinister once again trapped Remy. In my opinion it had to do with Bella Donna's death (as he mentioned in UXM #350), Belle wasn't dead at all, but a man like Sinister would have no problem faking her death. I believe that Sinister revealed Belle wasn't dead, but dying, then offered to 'save' her.

Belle was Remy's best friend, and wife, it would have been the price to buy him, and have him lead the Marauders into the tunnels of the Morlocks.

Gambit would justify his actions then, by reasoning that he didn't KNOW what the Marauders would do, but knew Belle would 'die.'
