Remy Le Beau, AKA Gambit is described often as a mystery, born to unknown parents (though there have been plenty of speculation of who they might be), he was either abducted from the hospital where he was born.

Whether he had actually been abandoned prior to this is something that isn't known.
Remy's abductors where the Thieves Guild of New Orleans, or more specifically the Antiquary, a member of the Guild who liked to deal in the selling of children. However as it is discovered recently it appears as if Remy was considered to important by the Antiquary to be sold. Instead he was kept and taken care of the man, who was also revealed to have a huge interest in history. This hints that he read the Guild Prophecies, and certainly about the Old Kingdom which was supposed to be brought about by Le Diable Blanc (The White Devil with the Red Eyes) which was of course what Remy looked like.

However, the person who had first read about Le Diable Blanc was Jean-Luc Le Beau, Patriarch of the Thieves Guild. Despite the objections of the High Council Jean-Luc wished to have Le Diable in his own care, though he was unable to directly take the child, as the Antiquary was too powerful. Instead he had the child taken by others and placed on the streets of New Orleans, in Fagan's Mob. The purpose of this was to teach the child the ways of the Thieve's Guild.

It was a success the young boy quickly become a talented thief, despite his strange eyes which he usually had to hide behind sunglasses.

Another part of the Guild Prophecy also spoke of how a union between the Le Diable Blanc and the daughter of the Assassins Guild Patriarch would finally bring peace to the two warring Guilds. To that end, Jean-Luc and Marius Boudreaux arranged Marius' daughter Bella Donna to be seemingly caught in Assassin trap and have Remy save her. The plan went off without a hitch and Remy jumped to Belle's rescue, though of course Belle didn't really need it. She was a trained Assassin, and even at eight could have easily fought off the men herself, a  fact she proved to Remy when she threw her knife at  the handle of one of the mallets he'd used on the Assassins, hitting it right on centre.

Soon though, any animosity Belle felt at been 'rescued' disappeared and the two became fast friends, spending lots of time together.

Finally when Remy was 9, Jean-Luc instructed Fagan it was time, the Thief then orderd Remy to steal the wallet and watch of a particular man at a cafe. Remy did so not knowing this was Jean-Luc Le Beau. Jean-Luc caught him, but didn't hand him over to the police, but took him in and eventually adopted him.

Jean-Luc and his son, Henri quickly became as close as real family to Remy,  and one of their cousin's, the young Emil Lapin, became one of Remy's closest friends next to Belle.

As hoped Remy ignored the fact he was now the adopted son of the enemies of Belle and her clan, and continued to meet with her anyway. Causing mixed reactions with just about everyone connected with the Guild.

When Remy and Belle were thirteen or so they began to date, whether this was forced or not is unknown, but appears it wasn't, although it made Marius Boudreaux furious, he was still unable to truly accept his daughter was going out with a Thief.

When Remy was fifteen he was told by his father that a marriage between him and Belle had been arranged! They'd be married as soon as Remy turned eighteen. Remy and Belle agreed to be married, although Remy had many doubts about the marriage.
