* Kabir Singh Athwal was born at 9:45 a.m. at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, California.

* The Nasdaq stock index plunged to its lowest level of the year.

* The Federal Reserve unveiled the new $5 and $10 bills.
* The Indiana Pacers took a 1-0 lead over the New York Knicks in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals (the Pacers advanced to the Finals and proceeded to lose to my favorite team, the Champion Los Angeles Lakers).

* The Dallas Stars took a commanding 3-2 lead over the Colorado Avalanche in the NHL Western Conference Finals (the Stars advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals and proceeded to lose to the Champion New Jersey Devils).

* RHP Chris Carpenter and the Toronto Blue Jays outdueled the legend-in-the-making RHP Pedro Martinez and his Boston Red Sox, 3-2.

* The Philadelphia Phillies called up the #1 overall pick in the 1998 MLB Amateur Draft, Pat Burrell (who went to Dad's high school, Bellarmine College Prep).

* The double-murder trial for Baltimore Ravens MLB Ray Lewis began.  Lewis was later acquitted on the murder charges and pled guilty to obstruction of justice. Dad believes that both the charges and the media coverage of the event were racially motivated.

* The sale of the San Francisco Whiners from the embattled Eddie DeBartolo, Jr. to his sister Denise York was finalized.
* The racist Governor of racist South Carolina finally agreed to remove the racist Confederate Flag from the State Capitol.

* Racist idiot LHP John Rocker of the Atlanta Braves (who made disparaging, simple-minded and hypocritical remarks about racial minorities, immigrants, homosexuals, unwed mothers and a number of other groups of people) came back from suspension, much to the delight of thousands of racist fans across the country, particularly in Atlanta.

* The country was inexplicably obsessed with the plight of a young Cuban boy named Elian Gonzalez. The issue was whether Elian should be allowed to stay in the United States with his deceased mother's family, or in Cuba with his father. Elian was eventually returned back to Cuba to live with his father.

* The 2000 United States Census was underway. The results of the Census are used, among other things, to determine governmental funding and planning.

* Charles Quackenbush (Dad says he's a bastard) was mired in the insurance scandal that eventually consumed his position as the California Insurance Commissioner.

* Israel finally pulled out of South Lebanon, an area (among others) it had no business occupying.

* The top movies of the week: 1) Dinosaur, 2) Gladiator (Dad gave this movie a 7/10), 3) Road Trip, 4) U-571, 5) Frequency, 6) Battlefield Earth, 7) Small Time Crooks, 8) Center Stage, 9) Where the Heart Is, 10) The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas.

* The dominant show on television was ABC's quiz show "Who Wants to be a Millionaire," hosted by Regis Philbin.

* Continuing its decline, the struggling music industry was dominated by untalented acts such as Britney Spears, 'N Sync, Christina Aguilera and Eminem.  Carlos Santana and Dr. Dre provided an oasis in the middle of the desert that the music industry had become.
* Actress Joan Collins (b. 1933)

* Boxer "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler (b. 1952)

* Comedian Drew Carey (b. 1958)

* Singer Maxwell (b. 1973)

* Singer Jewel (b. 1974)

Zodiac Sign: GEMINI
Gemini is the third sign of the Zodiac, and those born under this sign will be quick to tell you so. That's because Geminis absolutely love to talk. It's not just idle talk either; the driving force behind a Gemini's conversation is their mind. The Gemini is intellectually inclined, forever probing people and places in search of information. Sharing that information with people they love is unique to the Gemini, for Geminis are supremely interested in developing their relationships. Interaction with the Gemini is always enjoyable; they are quick-witted and the proverbial life of the party. Even though their intellectual minds are prone to over-rationalization, Geminis also have a surplus of imagination and are therefore never boring. Since Geminis are a mix of the yin and yang, they can easily see both sides of an issue, a wonderfully practical quality. Less practical is the fact that you're never sure if the yin or the yang is going to show up at any given moment. The Gemini is therefore flexible and adaptable and excel in commingling with a variety of different personalities. Geminis are often accused of being cold-hearted due to their reliance on logic and intellect; however, this is just Gemini's method of interacting with the world around them and should not be mistaken for a lack of passion.

My Horoscope for the Day
"You are a natural psychologist and writer. You have a knack for inspiring others. You are better at helping other people than promoting your own cause. You are attractive, creative, and have plenty of sex appeal (as Grandpops would say, "ooh daddy!"). Abundance of social activities are indicated this year; you will meet people who will become fast friends. September will be memorable."

Chinese Zodiac: the DRAGON
The Year 2000 is not only the year of the Dragon (perhaps the most powerful and lucky signs in the Chinese Zodiac) but it is also a golden year, and therefore the year of the Golden Dragon, which instills within it even more luck and power. In addition to being powerful and lucky, Dragons are giving, intelligent and tenacious, known exactly what they want and are determined to get it. Further, they can easily influence their peers and often find themselves the center of attention in social settings. As if all this wasn't enough, Lady Love is the Dragon's best friend! Friends are always keen to hear what this firebrand has to say, and when it comes to dispensing advice, the Dragon has the floor. It is the ego that can get in Dragon's way, as Dragons often believe that it is their inherent right to lead the way and can be another's worst enemy if they believe they have been crossed. Nevertheless, Dragons are lucky to be endowed with the acute ability to lead and motivate. As luck would have it, Dragons are likely to achieve considerable material wealth during their lifetime, although they aren't motivated by pursuit of the almighty dollar.

Miscellaneous Note
On July 14, 2000, I went out to dinner with my family for the first time (it was at one of Mom and Dad's favorite places: Chinese Food at the Golden Buddha in San Jose).  Here was my very first fortune from my very first fortune cookie:
"You will be fortunate in the opportunities presented to you."
