INFORMATION
The district Chakwal is situated less than 100 kilometers to the north -east if
Islamabad. Driving time to the city of Chakwal is about 90 minutes and all
places of tourist's interest are connected through good metalloid roads.
However, a tourist wishing to make deeper excursion into the rugged countryside
may require a sturdy 4x4 vehicle. The landscape is very scenic and the terrain
varies from vast plains criss -crossed by huge nullah beds to undulating
expanses which gracefully converge into hilly forest. Apart from natural beauty,
Chakwal has a rich archaeological interest are said to date-back to many
thousand years before Christ. Such sites include forts, temples and habitat.
Recently some very interesting new archaeological discoveries have also been
made. Chakwal has a number of beautiful and scenic lush green valleys like
Choa-Saidan-Shah, Kahun, Kallar Kahar and Gandhala. These valleys abound in
orchards of Peach, Pear, Guava and Locatt. The unpolluted and healthy air is
generally filled with the aroma of fruits and wild flower. In addition to a
number of natural lakes there are some man-made lakes built for irrigation
purposes which also serve as excellent picnic spots.
In
326 BC, Alexander the great after negotiating a truce with Raja Ambi of Taxila
is reported to have proceeded to Chakwal and Choa Sadian Shah. After CHANDRA
Gupt Moria Ashok, came into power in this area. Sign of a Buddhist rule are
visible all over the area of Kallar Kahar, Malot Sub Ganga and Katas Raj. Later
the Hindu Rajas of Kashmir took over this area and their occupation continued
till 900 AD Takhte Babri and Baghe Safa are reminiscent of the long rule of the
Mughals in this area. The Sikhs and finally the British followed the Mughals.
