Road To Nowhere Chapter 16: What I'd Wish Courtney picked Dan up in front of his house at 7:00 P.M. There wasn't much talk on the way to the dance. Both were consumed in their own thoughts. Courtney's were on Dan and Dan's were on Courtney. Yet neither knew the other was thinking about them. Courtney parked in front of the school and the pair got out and headed to the gym. They handed the lady their tickets and proceeded to enter the gym. It was decorated with all the usual high school decorations. Courtney spotted Matt and her friends and waved at them. They totally ignored her, but she wasn't about to brush it off. "Hey, I'll be right back," she said to Dan making her way over to her friends. "Courtney," Matt said as she approached. "Matt," Courtney replied mocking his serious tone. "What do you want Courtney? Aren't you here with Dan?" Matt asked. "Yes, I am, but I hate that we have to fight," Courtney said actually serious this time. "Yeah, me too. Court, you are my best friend. Truce?" Matt asked, his face lighting up. "Truce," Courtney agreed. She hugged Matt. "It's good to have you back, pretty boy." Matt pulled back. "What was that? Was that a 'pretty boy' comment I heard?" he said jokingly. "Oh yeah tough man, it sure was!" Courtney giggled as she started to back away from him. "You're gonna get it Court!" Matt teased as she walked back to Dan. "So are you guys friends again?" Dan asked her. "Unfortunately, yes," Courtney laughed. "Let's dance!" They danced to a few fast songs before someone called Courtney up to the microphone. Courtney went up and was handed the mic. The crowd began to chant "Karaoke! Karaoke! Karaoke!" Courtney smiled good-naturedly and began to sing to 'Irresistible' by Jessica Simpson. Dan stood near Matt taking in Courtney's beautiful voice. "I didn't know Courtney could sing," Dan said to Matt. "Yeah, well there's a lot you don't know about that girl," Matt replied. "Like what?" Dan asked turning toward Matt. "Like she's crazy in love with you." * * * * Dan and Courtney danced the night away. They laughed and had so much fun; they didn't want the night to end. When it did though, Courtney drove Dan home. They paused when Dan didn't get out of the car. "Courtney, I had fun tonight," Dan said staring into her eyes. "Me too, Dan," Courtney said sweetly. "There's nothing else I'd wish for right now," Dan replied still entranced by her beautifully sparkling eyes. "The only thing I'd wish for right now is more time with you," Courtney cooed into his ear. They moved slowly, cautiously toward each other. Their lips met and lingered together. The kiss was as beautiful as the first. Neither wanted to end it. They pulled away amazed at the power of just one kiss. "Night Dan," Courtney said licking her lips. "Bye beautiful," Dan said getting out of the car and running up his front steps. * * * *
