Road To Nowhere Chapter 15: Dreaming

Dan lay awake in his bed. It was 12:04 A.M. he wondered if Courtney would kill him if he called her this late. She had had a long day, what with the game and all, so he probably shouldn't call. He wanted to hear her voice so badly though. He wanted to apologize for the way he had acted, for lying to her. If he didn't call, he wouldn't be able to sleep and staying awake was torturing him. He got out of bed and stumbled to the phone.

He dialed her number. He was about to hang up on the third ring when he heard someone pick it up. It took a few seconds for the person on the other end to realize that they were supposed to answer.

"Hello?" Courtney said groggily into the phone.

"Courtney?" Dan asked shakily. His hands were shaking so badly that he was afraid that he was going to drop the phone.

"Dan? You do realize that it is 12 freakin AM, don't you?" Courtney said angrily.

"I know and I'm sorry for calling this late but I needed to apologize for today," Dan was cut off by Courtney's snarls.

"If you value your life at all you will hang up this phone and never call me again," Courtney's temper was flaring.

"Court, please listen. I lied when I said that I don't think about the kiss. I think about it so much, it hurts. Whatever it was, I want more of it. Courtney, you don't know how deeply I care for you," Dan rambled on.

"Shit Dan. If we're gonna have a freakin confession right now, then I have something to add," Courtney said.

"Yes?" Dan's hopes rose. Maybe she did feel something after all.

"I think you're a jackass for calling me in the middle of the night," Courtney replied.

Dan's hopes and heart sank. "I'm so sorry, Courtney. I thought you'd understand."

"Well obviously, I don't. Okay? Now leave me the hell alone," Courtney slammed down the phone, making Dan think of the first day he met her.

She had played so hard to get that day. She had talked so much trash and yet, somehow he had won her over enough for her to kiss him, to trust him. And now he had ruined it all.

Courtney sat on her bed trying to go back to sleep after Dan's phone call. She knew that if she didn't makeup with him then she wouldn't have a date to homecoming. And she knew that he wasn't about to call her back. She picked up the phone and dialed his number; it only rang once.

"Hello?" Dan answered.

"It's me," Courtney said without an ounce of enthusiasm or emotion.

"Courtney! You called back," Dan said excited.

"No shit Sherlock," Courtney replied with annoyance in her voice.

"Why'd you call back?" Dan asked her.

"Because it was rude of me to hang up on you when you were getting all mushy on me," Courtney said trying to skate around the subject.

"Court, I know it's late and I understand that you're probably really mad at me for calling," Dan apologized.

"Dan, it's okay. It was nice of you to call and apologize," Courtney replied warming up to his friendly tone.

"So, no hard feelings?" Dan asked.

"No hard feelings," Courtney echoed. "I'll call you tomorrow at a decent hour."

"Okay. Sweet dreams, Courtney," Dan said.

"Night Dan," Courtney hung up the phone civilly this time. She fell back onto her bed and was sound asleep within five minutes.
